Box Score Utica, NY – The #7 Lackawanna College Women's Basketball team traveled to Mohawk Valley Community College on Tuesday afternoon, in what would turn out to be one of their toughest challenges, so far, this season. Both teams came into the game with only 1 loss and similar styles. It would take a complete effort by the Lady Falcons if they wanted to leave New York with their 7
th win of the season.
The 1
st two quarters saw both teams trying to take control of the game. However, it was a back and forth affair, with neither team able to separate itself from the other. Lackawanna's
Miliesha Troche and
Ciaira Loyd led the Lady Falcons on the offensive side keeping them in the game every time Mohawk Valley tried to pull away. Troche would score a total of 11 points in the first half, with 9 of those points coming from 3-pointers, while Loyd added 10 points, with 6 of those coming from 3-pointers.
Kyla Smith and
Briaunna McCullough got in on the 3-point action, with Smith adding 2 and McCullough adding 1. All-in-all, Lackawanna would score a total of 24 points off of 8 3-pointers in the first half, to give them a 39-38 lead, going into the Locker room. Mohawk Valley's Lyrik' Jackson led all scorers in the 1
st half with 12 points.
The 2
nd half saw the Lady Falcons continue their dominance behind the 3-point arch. Meliesha Troche connected on 4 more 3-pointers and
Briaunna McCullough added another 2. Lackawanna's outside shooting was a main reason they were able to stay in the game with Mohawk Valley. Another reason was
Ciaira Loyd's performance at the free throw line. In the 2
nd half, she would convert 6 of 8 from the charity stripe.
Keyanah Price's performance on the offensive boards kept the Lady Falcons scoring chances alive. She finished the game with 10 offensive rebounds, to go along with her 5 defensive rebounds. Lackawanna's performance was just enough, as they would escape with a hard fought 86-82 victory.
The win moves the Lady Falcons to 7-1 on the season, as they prepare to travel to Cranford, NJ on Thursday, December 12
th to face #18 Union County College, in a pivotal Region XIX matchup. Lackawanna will close out the 2019 portion of their schedule when they travel to Wilmington, NC to participate in the Sea Devils' Christmas Classic, next Monday and Tuesday at Cape Fear Community College. Lackawanna will open with East Georgia State College on Monday at 4:00pm and play South Georgia Technical College on Tuesday at 1:00pm.
