SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – Lackawanna College women's volleyball struggled to contain a hot-hitting Shippensburg University, as the Raiders pillaged their way past the Falcons for the straight-set win (25-12, 25-11, 25-10) on Friday evening at the Heiges Field House on Shippensburg's campus.
Â
The Falcons (0-16) certainly committed their fair share of errors, hitting at -.013, but the real issue was Shippensburg's efficiency on attack, as the Raiders (15-8) never hit below .333 in a set and finished at .434, committing just four errors in attack on the night. Shippensburg had four total blocks and 12 aces against the Falcons.
Â
Lackawanna was in the match early in the first set, leading early at 2-0 and staying close to the Raiders, down 9-7 through the first 16 points. However, Shippensburg used a 10-3 run to blow the match open, relying on two service aces, four Falcons errors, and three kills to go up 19-11. They'd score the final six of seven points to win the first set at 25-12.
Â
In set two, Lackawanna hopped in front, helped by three kills from
Jana Hofmann (Colorado Springs, CO) and a kill each from
Ciona Braziel (Fort Worth, TX) and
Nadia Toth (Dalton, PA), to go up 7-3. Shippensburg scored four-straight to tie the set, Braziel earned another kill to make it 8-7, Falcons, and then Ship hit the gas, scoring nine of the next ten points to flip the script. In the run, the Raiders were ruthless on offense, posting seven kills, an ace, and taking advantage of a Lackawanna error. The Falcons got it to 18-11, but Shippensburg hit another run, this time scoring the final seven points to win it 25-11.
Â
Shippensburg wasted no time in set three, leaping to an 8-1 lead. It ballooned to 12-3 before the Falcons started to try to match the Raiders, getting within 13-6 after a kill from Toth. That would be the closest they'd get, however, as Shippensburg hit a blistering .556 for the set and ran away for the 25-10 win to seal the sweep.
Â
Hofmann led the Falcons with eight kills. Braziel and Toth each had two kills.
Kaitlyn Reed (Aurora, CO) had 12 assists, while
Adalee Rosado Rivera (Guyama, Puerto Rico) had two aces and a team-high 15 digs.
Â
Lackawanna College is back in action on Saturday, October 24
th, with a road contest at Shepherd University. First serve is set for 1:00pm ET inside the Butcher Athletic Center on campus in Shepherdstown, West Virginia.
