JAMESTOWN, NY – Three top-four finishes and sixth-place spot helped Lackawanna College men's wrestling excel at the 2026 edition of the Jamestown CC Jayhawks Open all day Saturday in western New York.
Â
The Falcons were paced by the unbeaten run at 285 lbs. by
Brodie Daugherty (Manheim, PA), as the big man went 5-0 on his way to the championship at 285.
Richard Leslie (Peckville, PA) finished second at 165 lbs., going 4-1 and falling in the championship match in the last 30 seconds.
Matt Gashi-Brito (Fairfax, VA) was an iron man for the Falcons at 149 lbs., wrestling eight matches and going 6-2 to finish fourth.
Jeremiah Diaz (Wyomissing, PA) went 3-3 at 184 lbs. to finish sixth for the Falcons, while
Connor Ondek (Scranton, PA) just missed out on placing, going 3-2 at 157 lbs.
Â
Daugherty's path to glory started with a victory by fall over the unattached Tyler Baetzold in in the first period. He beat Austin DeBolt from Alfred State via technical fall, then took down Mykola Fabian from Onondaga via a medical forfeit in a match he was already winning 9-2 in the third period. In the semi-final round, Daugherty battled Jacob Holtz from John Carroll, taking an 11-1 lead into the third period before nailing a takedown at 1:04 and eventually getting a pin at 6:40 to punch his ticket to the championship bout. Daugherty handled his opponent, Eli Makel from Edinboro, in the final, taking a 3-1 lead into the third period, earning an escape and then a takedown 90 seconds in, and getting an extra point on riding time for the 8-1 victory. Daugherty remains unbeaten on the season and is now 14-0.
Â
Leslie opened his run to the final with an impressive technical fall win against Jon Monasterio from Gannon, 17-1. Leslie led 8-2 heading into the third period against his next opponent, Isaac Placencia from Point Park, but Placencia earned a stall penalty and then a four-point near fall to get within 8-7 just before the end of the match, but it was too little, too late. Leslie won 9-7 with an extra point coming from riding time. Leslie won his quarterfinal bout over Jaden Reagle from Mercyhurst in a similar fashion, building an early lead with a pair of first period takedowns and cruising to the 8-4 decision to get to the semis. He'd dominate Brooks Smith from Garrett there to reach the finals, winning in a major decision at 13-2. Leslie's opponent in the first-place bout was Teshaun Matthews from SUNY Niagara, who beat Leslie earlier this season for first place in the Thunderwolves Open. Leslie took an early 3-1 lead into the second period, but was behind 5-4 heading into the third stanza. He earned a point to tie things at 5-5 early in the third, but Matthews grabbed a late lead with a takedown with 32 seconds to go, edging out Leslie for the title at 165.
Â
At 149 lbs., Gashi-Brito began his marathon day with a fall in 30 seconds, but then dropped his next bout in a 21-4 technical fall to Kyle Bizjak from John Carroll, who eventually won the championship for 149 lbs. In the consolation round, Gashi-Brito earned a victory by fall in 2:41, then grabbed two more falls and a forfeit to get to the consolation semi-final round. In his seventh bout of the day, Gashi-Brito picked up a huge victory by fall in the second period, defeating Nikolas Fegert from Pitt Bradford at 4:04 to reach the third-place bout. Against Dominic Ferraro from Edinboro, Gashi-Brito was overwhelmed quickly, as Ferraro raced to a 10-1 lead and won via fall at 2:34 to hand Gashi-Brito fourth place.
Â
Diaz was boat-raced, 16-0, in a tech. fall in the first bout at 184 lbs., but he bounced back quickly with back-to-back falls in 30 seconds in the consolation round. In the third round of consolations, Diaz overwhelmed George Green from Thiel, taking an 11-3 lead after just one period and finished it off with a takedown and a near fall in the second to get the tech. fall at 18-3. In the consolation semis, Diaz blasted out to an 8-3 lead through the first two periods, then got an escape to start the third period, but Louie DeJulia from PSU Behrend turned the tables on Diaz with a takedown with 90 seconds to go, a four-point near fall, and then the pin at 5:45 to send Diaz to the fifth-place bout. The fifth-place match was a wild one against Braeden Poorbaugh from Garrett. Poorbaugh led 9-2 into the second period, but Diaz managed to score a takedown and a two-point near fall to get within 9-7. An escape, a takedown, and a penalty point made it 14-7, Poorbaugh, but Diaz countered with an escape, and a takedown of his own. Poorbaugh was clinging to a 15-11 lead heading into the final period. A penalty point and an escape for Diaz brought it to 15-13, but another penalty point against him put Poorbaugh up 16-13. Diaz scored a takedown with just over a minute to go to tie the bout, but Poorbaugh escaped to get in front at 17-16. Another takedown for Diaz gave him the lead at 19-17 with just 21 seconds left, but Poorbaugh countered with an escape just before the horn blew, and earned an extra point on riding time to force the bout to sudden victory. In that overtime period, Poorbaugh scored a takedown nine seconds in to win the wild match and sent Diaz to the sixth-place finish.
