SCRANTON, Pa. – A slow start on Wednesday afternoon wasn't enough to keep Lackawanna College baseball from rolling to its sixth-straight win, as the Falcons took a 14-4 victory in eight innings against Delaware County CC at Scranton HS baseball field in a Region XIX cross-divisional match-up.
Â
The Falcons (27-15) found themselves locked in a 2-2 game heading into the bottom of the fourth inning, as the Phantoms (3-30-1) were holding serve, but the game was broken wide-open in the home half.
Â
A hit batter, followed by a stolen base, put a runner in scoring position, and
Jackson Weidner (Wildwood, MO) singled on a hard ground ball to second. The runner on second,
Kolton Haifley (New Oxford, PA), was running on the pitch, then swung around third and sprinted home to give the Falcons the 3-2 lead. Another single, followed by an intentional walk to
Deacon Brown (Williamsport, PA), loaded the bases for
Louis Kegerreis (Murrysville, PA). Kegerreis pounced on an 0-1 pitch and smashed it to left field for a grand slam homer, pushing the Lackawanna lead out to 7-2.
Â
Still in the bottom of the fourth, the Falcons loaded the bases with two outs, and Weidner came to bat again. Weidner lifted a long fly ball to right field that looked like it was going to be caught, but was dropped. The runners all sprinted around the bases on the error, scoring three more Lackawanna runs to run the lead up to 10-2, Falcons, after four.
Â
Delco scored a pair of runs in the top of the fifth, but pitcher
Julian Montez (Westfield, NJ) struck two straight batters to get out of major trouble. Montez finished with six strikeouts and pitched two innings to get his first win of the season.
Â
Lackawanna got two sac flies in the fifth inning to go ahead 12-4, then added an RBI single in the seventh, followed by a walk-off double in the bottom of the eighth from
Kenny Hirschfeld (New Hyde Park, NY), who launched a double to left center to score the run that triggered the run-rule victory.
Â
The Falcons finished with 15 hits and seven walks as a team. Brown had a two-run home run on the second pitch of the game to put the Falcons up early and finished 2-for-3 with three runs and two RBIs. Kegerreis had four RBIs and two hits, including his grand slam. Hirschfeld was 3-for-6 with an RBI, while Weidner went 2-for-4 with a run and an RBI. Montez pitched two innings, giving up two runs on three hits and striking out six for the win. Relievers
Geoffrey Moore,
Anthony Arkey (Avon Lake, OH), and
Cole Long (Burnettsville, IN) all combined to throw three scoreless innings to close the game out, striking out a combined six batters and allowing just one hit.
Â
Lackawanna College has now won six straight games, and the Falcons have scored in double-figures in their last four contests. The Falcons have four remaining contests in their regular season, and they'll be on the road this weekend for all four games. Lackawanna will play a doubleheader on Saturday, May 3
rd, at UConn Avery Point in Groton, CT. First pitch is set for 1:00pm ET against the Pointers, who are 25-4 on the season.
