BASE: Falcons Hang On For Doubleheader Split At UCAP

Lackawanna College Nearly Blew An Eight-Run Lead, But The Falcons Held Firm In Game Two To Split The Spoils With UConn Avery Point

5/3/25

GROTON, Conn. – Three runs in the sixth proved to be vital for Lackawanna College baseball in game two on Saturday afternoon at UConn Avery Point, as the Falcons blew an eight-run lead and held on tight for the 10-7 win to earn a doubleheader split in non-region play. The Falcons couldn't hold on to the lead in game one, as the Pointers scored three runs in the final two innings to win in a walk-off, 6-5.

The Falcons (28-16) plated three runs on a John Hughes (Hamilton, NJ) sac fly and a two-run single from Nick Matson (Nanticoke, PA) in the top of the sixth inning to extend to a 10-2 lead in game two. After Anthony Arkey (Avon Lake, OH) stranded runners on the corners with a clutch 5-4-3 double play in the bottom of the sixth, Lackawanna sent Landon Brandt (Wapakoneta, OH) to the bump to start the seventh. A fly out, followed by a hit batter and two walks, loaded the bases. A bases loaded walk forced in a run, and the Falcons went with Geoffrey Moore out of the pen. Moore got the second out on a sac fly to right, but a single and a double scored three more runs and made it just a three-run lead at 10-7. Connecticut native Hayden Klyver (Wilton, CT) came on to get the final out in a save situation, inducing a ground ball to short to end a tighter-than-expected game two for his second save of the season.

Lackawanna took an early lead on a wild pitch with the bases loaded in the top of the first inning, then used a two-run double from Brooks Henderson IV (Feasterville, PA) and an error on the infield to take a 4-0 lead after 1.5 innings.

UCAP (27-5) got two runs back in the bottom of the third, scored on a bases-loaded hit by pitch and a fielder's choice to make it 4-2, Falcons.

The Falcons scored three more in the top of the fourth, plating a run on a single by Hughes and getting a two-run error on the infield to go ahead 7-2 after 3.5 innings, setting up the wild finish later in the game.

Tyler Lepage (Macungie, PA) got his first win of the year, thanks to a clean inning of work in the bottom of the fourth. Henderson and Hughes were two of five different Lackawanna players with two or more hits. Henderson had a double, two runs, and two RBIs, while Hughes was 2-for-3 with a sac fly and two RBIs. Louis Kegerreis (Murrysville, PA) had a pair of hits and a run scored, while Deacon Brown (Williamsport, PA) had three hits and two runs. Jack Friend (East Setauket, NY) had two hits and a run at the bottom of the lineup.

The Falcons blew a 4-1 lead in game one, as the Pointers scored five runs in the final three innings to win it on a walk-off single, 6-5.

Kegerreis homered in the fourth to give the Falcons a 2-1 lead, and Lackawanna led on RBI singles from Hughes and Henderson at 4-1 after the top of the fifth.

UCAP bounced back for two in the bottom frame, getting a pair of two-out RBI singles to get within 4-3. A bases-loaded HBP on Kegerreis drove in a run for the Falcons in the top of the sixth, but Avery Point got to Matson, who came on for a two-inning save, in the bottom half.

With two outs and runners on the corners, Matson hit a batter to load the bases. A single to left scored a pair, tying the game at 5-5 heading into the seventh.

After the Falcons went in order in the top half, Avery Point loaded the bases with one out. A fielder's choice forced an out at home to put two on the board, but a single scored the winning run to give the Pointers the game one victory.

Hughes was 2-for-3 with two RBIs, while Kegerreis had two RBIs and his solo homer. Lepage went 2-for-4, while Henderson had a pair of hits and an RBI. Matson got the loss, his first of the year, giving up three runs, two earned, on four hits in 1.2 innings of action.

Lackawanna College has one more regular season doubleheader this season, as the Falcons are set to travel to Northampton CC for a pair of games on Sunday, May 4th. First pitch is set for 12:00pm ET in Bethlehem, PA at Spartan Park. After that, the Region XIX DII playoffs are set to get underway on Friday, May 9th, at Mercer County CC.
