Lackawanna College Handed DIII #1 Gloucester Its First Shutout In Six Years And Only Its Fourth Loss This Season

4/24/25

SEWELL, NJ – Despite 18 strikeouts, Lackawanna College baseball pulled off a massive upset, knocking off the top-ranked RCSJ Gloucester Roadrunners in non-region action, 8-0, on Thursday afternoon in southern New Jersey.

The Falcons (23-15) kept making outs at the plate, but still managed to put up eleven hits and hit a pair of home runs, while scoring seven runs through the first five innings. Deacon Brown (Williamsport, PA) was 3-for-5 with two runs and three RBIs, hitting a solo home run, while Nick Matson (Nanticoke, PA) went 2-for-4 with two RBIs, and Jack Hughes (Hamilton, NJ) hit his team-best tenth home run of the season. The pitching staff was excellent for the Falcons, with Daniel Jacobs (West Chester, PA) throwing four scoreless innings and striking out four, and Josiah Williams (Emmaus, PA) throwing three more scoreless innings to earn the win, striking out three and allowing just two hits. The Roadrunners (37-4) managed just six hits, stranded 14 runners, and committed five errors on defense. The scoreless outing marks the first shutout against Gloucester in six years.

Lackawanna scored first, using a two-out single from Louis Kegerreis (Murrysville, PA) to score Brown and make it 1-0, Falcons. Jacobs pitched around a single and a walk, getting a strikeout for the third out to strand a pair in the bottom frame. Jacobs pitched around a bases-loaded situation with two outs in the second, getting a ground out to the pitcher to strand the three runners and keep the Roadrunners off the scoreboard.

Lackawanna stranded a runner at third in the third, but scored four runs in the top of the fourth. A Brooks Henderson IV (Feasterville, PA) double with one out got the Falcons a runner in scoring position, and Mark Zuppo (Garnet Valley, PA) scored Henderson with a single to make it 2-0, Falcons. Matson singled Zuppo in to push the lead to 3-0. Later, an error loaded the bases with two outs, and Brown cashed in a pair with a two-run single to make it 5-0, Falcons, heading into the bottom of the fourth.

In the top of the fifth, Hughes led the inning off with a towering drive for his tenth home run of the season, and Matson made it 7-0 with a two-out single to increase the cushion to 7-0, Falcons.

Williams stepped on the bump for the Falcons to start the home half of the fifth, getting a pair of strikeouts, but giving up a single and two walks to load the bases with two down. Williams managed to wiggle out of trouble, getting a grounder back to himself to strand the bases loaded for the second time on the day.

In the bottom of the seventh, with the Falcons still ahead 7-0, Williams pitched around a double and an error to strand another pair of baserunners.

Brown led the ninth inning off with his own solo shot, boosting the Lackawanna advantage to 8-0. In the bottom half, Matson came on and pitched around a single to get to two outs. Back-to-back walks loaded the bases for a third time for Gloucester, but a soft fly out to Henderson at short stranded the three runners one more time, sealing the huge win on the road for Lackawanna College.

The NJCAA Division II Falcons have a few more non-region contests left in the regular season, and are back home this coming Saturday, April 26th, with a doubleheader against Harford CC. First pitch is scheduled for 3:00pm ET at the Scranton HS baseball field.
