BEL AIR, Md. – Errors completely derailed any chance Lackawanna College baseball had to snag a road win, as the Falcons fell to the Fighting Owls of Harford CC, 20-7, in seven innings of non-region action on Friday evening in Maryland.
Â
The Falcons (2-5) gave up seven runs through the first two innings, but looked like they had settled in in the fifth inning. Lackawanna scored a pair of runs in the top half, thanks to a bases loaded single from
Nick Matson (Nanticoke, PA), followed by a bases loaded walk drawn by
Tyler Lepage (Macungie, PA). Lackawanna had a chance after that, as the bases were still loaded with nobody out, but a strikeout and a double play ended that inning before the Falcons could get anything else.
Â
Harford (10-4), looking to expand their its 7-2 advantage, jumped on the Falcons, getting the leadoff batter on because of an error on the infield. Two batters later, with two on and nobody out, a bunt to the pitcher scored a run on an error on the throw. A bases-loaded walk with one out forced another run, then an RBI single , followed by a two-run double, completely blew things open at 13-2. A sac fly to center scored one more, and it was 14-2 Owls after five.
Â
The Falcons scored three in the sixth to answer back, thanks to a bases-loaded single from
Jordan Czerniak (Levittown, PA) and a two-run double from Matson. The Falcons got greedy, however, as Czerniak tried to make it three runs and got nailed at the plate for the second out. A strikeout ended the inning, and Harford went right back on the offensive in the bottom of the sixth, scored five more runs with help from two more Lackawanna errors.
Â
Down 19-5 and needing at least seven runs to keep the game going, Lackawanna kept clawing, using a bases-loaded walk with one out to force one run in, and scoring another run on a wild pitch with two outs, before ending the game early via run rule on a strikeout.
Â
Lackawanna committed four errors on the night and scored seven runs on seven hits. Matson was 2-for-4 with three RBI and a double, while
Deacon Brown (Williamsport, PA) was 1-for-3 with another double.
Jake Kelleher (Exeter, PA) was 1-for-2 with a run scored and a walk, hitting a double.
McDermott Murphy (Albany, GA) scored a pair of runs. Pitcher
Ryan Novakowski (Forty Fort, PA) was hit hard through his three innings, giving up seven runs on seven hits with three strikeouts and two walks for his second loss of the season.
Â
The Falcons are back in action at Harford on Saturday, March 1
st, with a doubleheader starting at 1:00pm ET.
