WBB: Middlesex Pulls Away From Lackawanna

The Falcons Couldn't Survive A Fourth Quarter Swoon

12/6/25

SCRANTON, Pa. – An ill-timed scoring drought starved Lackawanna College women's basketball of crucial points in the fourth quarter, as visiting Middlesex College took the 74-59 win in Region XIX DII play on Saturday afternoon inside the historic Lackawanna College Student Union gymnasium.

The Falcons (4-6, 2-3) trailed by as many as 15 in the second half, but closed the gap to five with 90 seconds left in the third quarter after a three-pointer from Alania Ortiz (Allentown, PA), and were down 56-49 heading into the final frame. Middlesex (5-8, 1-4) hit a three after two offensive rebounds to go ahead by ten, but Ortiz hit a jumper in the lane to make it 59-51 with 8:41 to go in the game. That would be the last bucket the Falcons would make until the 3:13 mark, as the Falcons missed five shots and committed five turnovers. In the same span, the Colts scored ten straight points to expand their lead to 69-51. The scoreless streak was snapped when Ali Johns (New Wales, PA) canned a free throw, but the Falcons still wouldn't hit a shot from the field until Johns scored a lay-up with under a minute to play.

Middlesex shot 36% from the field and dominated the Falcons on the glass, outrebounding Lackawanna 53-23, including 27 offensive rebounds. The Colts had 25 second-chance points to one for Lackawanna, while also putting four players in double-figures, led by Kendall Dixon's 23 points on five made three-pointers. Gabriella Nieves added 15 points and six rebounds, while Genilah Singleton had 15 points and nine rebounds off the bench, and Jaylah Boyd scored ten points and grabbed 12 boards.

Lackawanna shot 41.8% for the game, but was 3-for-10 in the fourth quarter, and just 8-for-17 from the free throw line on the afternoon. Ortiz led the short-handed Falcons with 23 points and eight rebounds, while Johns had 17 points, seven boards, and a team-high eight steals. Sophia Summa (Dunmore, PA) finished with nine points and a career-high eleven assists.

The Falcons will be back in action on Tuesday, December 9th, when they are scheduled to host the Mercer County CC Mustangs. First tip is set for 5:00pm ET inside the historic Lackawanna College Student Union gymnasium, and the game is the first of a doubleheader, with the men's teams following at 7:00pm ET.
