DUNMORE, Pa. – A crucial run at the end of the first half gave Lackawanna College men's basketball a comfortable lead it would never surrender, as the Falcons avenged a blow-out loss from a year ago with a 93-76 triumph on the road at Penn State Scranton on Thursday evening in non-NJCAA action.
Â
The Falcons (7-4) trailed 34-26 with 7:07 to go in the first half in front of a loud, standing-room-only crowd in the PSU Scranton gymnasium. The rally really started a few minutes earlier when
Khalil Kemp (Philadelphia, PA) came off the bench and scored eight straight points to pull the Falcons back within single-digits, but the Falcons truly hit their stride when
Elijah Smith (Washington, D.C.) hit the first of five-straight three-pointers for the visitors. His three, followed by a triple from Kemp, made it 34-32 in just 30 seconds.
Jaksa Pejovic (Podgorica, Montenegro) stepped into a three on the left wing to give the Falcons the lead at 5:47, then hit another trey 40 seconds later to make it 38-34, Falcons, and force a timeout from PSU Scranton (4-7).
Â
Another three fell from Kemp after the timeout, and it was the fifth-straight three from Lackawanna College. The Falcons closed the half on a 24-5 run, taking a 50-39 lead into halftime and silencing the crowd. The lead never dipped below seven points the rest of the way, and Lackawanna College shot 56.3% from the floor in the second half to maintain firm control on the result.
Â
For the game, the Falcons hit 48.7% from the field and knocked down nine three-pointers. Lackawanna outrebounded the Lions, 48-31, and forced 20 turnovers, scoring 25 points off turnovers. The Falcons also got a big boost from the bench, outscoring the Nittany Lions, 51-15. Penn State hit 36.9% from the floor and hit 12 three-pointers at a 33.3% clip. The Lions forced 21 Lackawanna turnovers and had five players in double-figures.
Â
Jaiden Wiggins led the home team with 18 points, while Fhenyx Scutt, Christian Brown, Syncere Newsuan, and Xavier Noble all scored 12 points, each, for Penn State.
Â
Kemp scored a game-high 20 points off the bench, hitting 7-for-11 from the floor and sinking four three-pointers. Pejovic scored 14 points and had five rebounds, while
Latrell Mark (Frederick, MD) had 12 points, ten rebounds, and ten assists, the first triple-double for Lackawanna College men's basketball since DeAndre Albritton in February 2012.
Â
The victory helps Lackawanna College avenge a loss from last year to the Lions, who beat the Falcons at the historic Lackawanna College Student Union, 86-63, in the home opener a season ago.
Â
Lackawanna will play another non-region contest on Saturday, December 13
th, when the Falcons travel to take on SUNY Rockland CC in Suffern, NY. Tip is set for 1:00pm ET inside the Eugene Levy Fieldhouse on the campus of Rockland.
