SCRANTON, Pa. – 13 second-half points from
Jaksa Pejovic was enough to help Lackawanna College men's basketball weather the storm, as the Falcons blew a 22-point lead but hung on for the 68-61 win against Delaware Tech CC in Region XIX Division II play on Saturday afternoon inside the historic Lackawanna College Student Union gymnasium.
Â
The Falcons (5-2, 1-1) led 43-21 just a few minutes into the second half, but visiting Del Tech (3-5, 0-1) slowly started the whittle away at the deficit. Within five minutes of game-time, the lead was down to 43-33 at the 12:45 mark.
Xavier Spears (Brooklyn, NY) hit a three-pointer to get the Falcons back up 13, but a free throw and then a three-pointer for DTCC had it at 46-37 with 11:36 to play.
Â
A minute later, Spears went 1-for-2 on the free throw line to make it 50-39. Some empty possessions for both sides eventually led to a Lackawanna possession with under nine to go. Pejovic (Podgorica, Montenegro) had just grabbed a rugged defensive rebound, hustled down the floor, and stepped into a three-pointer at the top of the key, banging it home to make it 53-39. On the next offensive possession, Pejovic executed a perfect give-and-go with
Noah Elias (Silver Spring, MD) to score through contact and make it 55-41, Falcons, with 7:52 to play. He'd miss the free throw, but an offensive rebound gave the Falcons another chance, and Pejovic buried a three-pointer on the left wing, through the foul, and then buried the free throw to complete the four-point play and make it 59-41, Falcons, with 7:36 to play.
Â
That little spurt would give the Falcons enough of a cushion that, when Del Tech began to mount another run, the Falcons would be able to survive. The visitors would get the margin back down to ten at 63-53 with 2:48 to play, then get as close as six with 24 seconds to play at 66-60. The Falcons went 1-for-2 from the free throw line to extend back out to a seven-point lead, then Del Tech got it back to six after also going 1-for-2 on the line. Pejovic went 1-for-2 with 15 seconds remaining, and a Del Tech three went wide, allowing the Falcons to run out the clock for the win.
Â
Pejovic led the Falcons with 13 points and nine rebounds, while
Latrell Mark (Frederick, MD) had 12 points, all coming in the first half, while posting seven rebounds and four steals.
Khalil Kemp (Philadelphia, PA) had nine points and three rebounds, while Elias added eight points. The Falcons shot 35.9% from the floor, but were just 13-for-24 from the free throw line and committed 22 turnovers.
Â
Amari Moses led DTCC with 15 points and 16 rebounds, while Jaxon Lennon had 14 points off the bench, and Adam Bailey scored eleven points. Chase Wright, who came in averaging over 21 points per game, was held to two points and didn't make a shot from the floor in 21 minutes. Del Tech shot 27.9% from the floor and was 22.6% from downtown, while going just 16-for-34 from the free throw line.
