ROCHESTER, NY – A 29-10 first quarter burst from SUNY Westchester CC was too much for Lackawanna College women's basketball to overcome, as the Falcons fell to the Vikings, 62-41, on Saturday afternoon at the Monroe CC Tip-Off Classic in western New York.
Â
The Falcons (0-3) were behind by 19 after one because of a hot-shooting Westchester squad (58.8% from the floor) and a cold-shooting Lackawanna side (4-for-14). Lackawanna led 8-3 after the first two minutes, thanks to back-to-back threes from
Ali Johns (North Wales, PA) and
Sophia Summa (Dunmore, PA), but the Vikings (4-1) held the Falcons without a bucket for the next 4:10, reversing the five-point deficit into a ten-point lead, before the Falcons finally broke the drought. But that bucket, a lay-up from
Jasmin Romano (Allentown, PA), would be the only shot made for the Falcons in that final 7:36, as Westchester went on a 26-2 run to go from 8-3 down to up 29-10 at the end of the quarter.
Â
After that, it was icy conditions for both teams from the floor. Westchester went 21.2% from the field in the second, third, and fourth quarters. Lackawanna College wasn't much better, hitting on just 23.5% of its shots from the floor the rest of the way, including an 0-for-10 showing from downtown in the second, third, and fourth quarters. Lackawanna trailed 43-19 at the break, and never got closer than 21 points, the final margin. Both teams went the final 2:28 without scoring.
Â
For the game, Lackawanna shot 24.6% from the floor and went 2-for-19 from downtown. The Falcons had 16 turnovers, while forcing 17, but got outrebounded 65-34 and, after giving up that early lead, were never truly in it again. Johns finished with a team-high 21 points and eleven rebounds for the double-double.
Alania Ortiz (Allentown, PA) had eight points and six rebounds, while Summa had four points, five assists, and two steals.
Â
Westchester shot 28.9% for the game and hit seven three-pointers. The Vikings had 24 offensive rebounds and eight blocks. Saniya Bell led all scorers with 28 points and ten rebounds, while Mariah Mills scored 13 points and had six assists. Daveya Rodriguez had five points, ten rebounds, and six assists.
Â
Lackawanna College will remain in Rochester and compete again on Sunday, November 16
th, at 10:00am ET, when the Falcons are slated to take on SUNY Brockport's club team at Monroe CC. Brockport is 0-3 on the season, falling to Monroe CC on Saturday, 96-33.
