NEWTON, NJ – Lackawanna College women's soccer battled hard but ultimately fell 8-0 to top-seed Sussex County CC on Wednesday afternoon in a Region XIX Division II playoff contest at Sussex.
Â
The Skylanders (11-2-0) had already beaten Lackawanna twice this season, via scores of 10-1 and 9-0, and jumped out in the first minute, taking advantage of a Lackawanna mistake. Just 30 seconds in, a ball bounced across the top of the box in the Lackawanna defensive half. It looked like the Falcons might be able to clear, but a defender stumbled trying to get to the ball, and Sussex quickly swooped in, driving towards the keeper, pulling back past a defender, and beating
Liz DePrimo's outstretched foot for the early 1-0 advantage.
Â
Despite having their collective backs against the wall, the Falcons (1-10-0) continued to fight and make the Skylanders earn it in the first half. DePrimo (Dunmore, PA) made some nifty saves, just a few of her 15 total stops on the day, including a curling shot in the 11
th minute from outside the box.
Â
The Flacons had a potential breakout near the 15
th minute, as
Melanie Shumway (Rome, PA) tracked back on defense and booted a ball into the Sussex area for
Peyton Butz (Pottstown, PA) to potentially run onto, but the ball was just a bit too long, and the Sussex keeper had no issues redirecting and clearing to her teammates.
Â
Eventually, the Sussex pressure paid off in the 25
th minute. A corner from the right side of the net found its way to the back post, where it was met by a Skylander and pumped in for the 2-0 lead.
Â
Five minutes later, after the Falcons were whistled offside, another corner almost led to a third goal for Sussex, but DePrimo made the diving save. Sussex would get their third, eventually, coming in the 37
th minute on a gorgeous shot from the right side of the box that curled into the top left corner. The Skylanders took a 3-0 lead into the break.
Â
In the second half, Sussex added a fourth goal in the 51
st minute, taking advantage of a Lackawanna turnover in the defensive half and finishing an excellent through ball into the box.
Â
After another Lackawanna offside, Sussex countered quickly down the left side, crossed on the ground into the box, and scored a fifth goal in the 54
th minute. Sussex got the Falcons to capitulate again in the 60
th minute, snagging a rebound off a long shot that deflected off DePrimo to make it 6-0. A seventh came on a shot from the top of the box in the 75
th minute, and the eighth and final goal ended things via the mercy rule in the 78
th minute on a long shot from the top of the box.
Â
The win propels Sussex into the Region XIX Division II championship match, happening at most Mercer County CC on Saturday, November 1
st. The loss ends the 2025 campaign for the Falcons. Lackawanna College ends its final season in the NJCAA with one win, a victory at PSU Scranton. The Falcons will compete in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference as a four-year institution for the first time in program history, starting in the 2026 season.
