WSOC: Shumway, Butz Power Falcons To First Win In 2025

Lackawanna College Women's Soccer Got Its First Win Of 2025 Thanks To An Eleven-Goal Performance At PSU Scranton

10/1/25

DUNMORE, Pa. – An offensive explosion from a pair of strikers helped fuel the first win of 2025, as Lackawanna College women's soccer knocked off Penn State Scranton, 11-3, on the road in non-NJCAA action on Wednesday afternoon at PSU Scranton's soccer field.

The Falcons (1-5-0) were overwhelming in their possession dominance, posting a staggering 58 shots, 40 of which were on target. Melanie Shumway (Rome, PA) scored five goals for the Falcons, while fellow striker Peyton Butz (Pottsville, PA) added five of her own. Lindsey Tasker (Clarks Summit, PA) also got on the scoresheet with her first goal of 2025, while keeper Madison Kattner (New Ringgold, PA) posted five saves.

Lackawanna peppered the Nittany Lion zone throughout the first half, finally breaking through in the 24th minute when Shumway shook a defender and scored to get the Falcons in front. Butz added her first goal of the season just five minutes later, swallowing up a rebound and doubling the Lackawanna lead at 2-0.

Butz scored again, this time on an assist from Lilyan Prussia (Moscow, PA), to make it 3-0 at the 40-minute mark. PSU Scranton (3-4-1) got on the board when Katie McFarland scored to pull a goal back with a nice shot on the right side. Butz added one more for a first half hattrick in the 45th minute to put the Falcons up 4-1 at the break.

In the second half, McFarland scored five minutes in to make it 4-2 and give the Nittany Lions a boost. Tasker scored six minutes later, hitting a long-arching, looping shot from well beyond the top of the box that beat the keeper. Shumway scored ten minutes later in the 66th minute, and that was the first of six goals scored in ten minutes, four from Shumway and two from Butz, that eventually put the Falcons up 11-2 with 14 minutes remaining. PSU Scranton scored one more goal I the 85th minute.

The win is the first for the Falcons under head coach Juan Almonte.

The Falcons are back to work with a Region XIX Division II contest on the road at Sussex County CC on Saturday, October 4th in New Jersey. First kick is set for 12:00pm ET at the Sussex County CC soccer field. Sussex is receiving votes in the latest NJCAA Division II polls, and the Skylanders beat the Falcons 10-1 earlier this season.
