MBB: Falcons Hosting Raritan In Must-Have Region Contest

Lackawanna College Begins A Four-Game Stretch Of Region XIX Home Contests That Will Decide Lackawanna's Postseason Fate

1/27/25

SCRANTON, Pa. – Lackawanna College men's basketball begins a crucial three-game home stretch on Tuesday, January 28th, when the Falcons are set to host Raritan Valley CC for a key Region XIX DII match-up on Faculty & Staff Appreciation Night in the Electric City.

Tip-off is scheduled for 7:00pm ET inside the historic Lackawanna College Student Union gymnasium. The game is the second of a pair, as the women's teams are set to play first at 5:00pm ET. The games are open to the public, with tickets sold at the door for adults ($5) and students ($3). Anyone with a valid Lackawanna College ID will gain free admission. There is a pay-per-view video livestream available via the Lackawanna College Athletics Network at lackawannafalcons.com/LIVE.

It's Faculty & Staff Appreciation night, as well as the annual Difference Makers games. Between the women's and men's game, there will be a brief presentation to the "Difference Makers" at Lackawanna College, as chosen by the student-athletes on the women's and men's basketball teams.

This is the second meeting between the Lions and the Falcons, with Raritan winning 94-76 back on December 3rd in New Jersey. The Lions shot 49% for the game and had four players in double-figures, while the Falcons couldn't keep pace, only shooting at 39.7%. Lackawanna twice came back from big deficits, but could never quite get it to a competitive score.

It's a crucial game for the Falcons, who sit at 4-4 and in fourth place in the Region XIX DII standings. Raritan Valley is 6-2 in region play and is in second place behind Middlesex College. A win for the Falcons would help Lackawanna try to keep pace with Morris in third, while giving Lackawanna a bit more breathing room in front of Essex. A loss would push Lackawanna's record to 4-5, and potentially tie it with Essex County College for fourth, with some tough games still to come.

About Raritan Valley CC
The defending Region XIX champion Lions (12-10, 6-2) have had an up-and-down spring semester, going 4-3 with some impressive wins and some tough losses. Amongst the impressive wins is the most recent for Raritan, as the Lions knocked off Region XIX DI opponent Harcum College, 85-84, last Tuesday. Raritan held a 43-40 lead at the break, and expanded that lead out to 66-54 with just under 12 minutes to go, but a put-back dunk woke up the visiting Bears, as Harcum went on a 10-0 run to cut the deficit to two, then eventually took the lead at the 6:50 mark on a breakaway dunk at 69-67. Eventually, with Harcum clinging to an 84-83 lead with 20 seconds to go, Raritan drew a foul with 4.6 seconds to play and sank two free throws to take the one-point lead. Harcum drove the ball the length of the floor and tried to draw contact, but the shot missed and Raritan earned a huge win.

Kevin Ryan returns as the head basketball coach at Raritan Valley CC, now in his 12th season overall with the program. Ryan's team last year went 24-7 overall, his best record at Raritan, and the fourth time he's won 20 or more games. Ryan first took over the program in 2012, and won 100 games in six seasons, ending with a 22-10 record in 2017-2018, his best season at the time. He left the program for one year, then returned ahead of the 2019-2020 campaign, once again retooling and rebuilding the Lions into the two-time defending champions. Ryan is a New Jersey native, playing two seasons of basketball at St. Peter's Prep before transferring to Lawrence Academy in Massachusetts, then playing a year of NCAA Division III basketball at Hartwick College in New York. He's a Catholic University graduate, who has spent time coaching in the AAU circuit in New Jersey for several years before taking over at Raritan. Ryan is 196-123 all-time in his Raritan career.

The Match-Ups
This is the second meeting of the season between Raritan and Lackawanna, with the Lions winning the December meeting, 96-74, in New Jersey. Raritan has won eight of the last nine match-ups with the Falcons, with the lone Lackawanna win coming in February 2023, when Lackawanna won 84-74 at home.

This begins a crucial run of home games for the Falcons, where their final four Region XIX contests in the regular season will be at home. Three of those four games are against the three teams ahead of the Falcons in the Region XIX DII standings. As things stand heading into Tuesday night:

1 – Middlesex (18-4, 6-2)
2 – Raritan Valley (12-10, 6-2)
3 – County College of Morris (10-11, 6-4)
4 – Lackawanna College (11-11, 4-4)
5 – Essex County College (6-14, 3-5)

Morris is idle on Tuesday, while #1 Middlesex is hosting #5 Essex, and #2 Raritan Valley is at #4 Lackawanna. A win for the Falcons over RVCC could draw the Falcons closer to Morris at the three-spot, while giving Raritan a little less wiggle room ahead of the Titans. A loss for the Falcons would bring them below .500 and closer to fifth-seed Essex. The Falcons own the tiebreaker over the Wolverines, but the margin for error for Lackawanna would be minimal for the rest of the region schedule.

Tip-off on Tuesday is scheduled for 7:00pm ET inside the historic Lackawanna College Student Union gymnasium.

Lackawanna remains in Region XIX DII action at home in its next contest on Saturday, February 1st, when the Falcons are set to host Middlesex College. Start time is 3:00pm ET inside the historic Lackawanna College Student Union gymnasium. The game is the second of a doubleheader, with the women's teams playing first at 1:00pm ET.
