MBB: Orange Squeezes Lackawanna As Falcons Fall On The Road

SUNY Orange Knocked Off Lackawanna With A Strong Second Half Push

Box Score 1/23/25

MIDDLETOWN, NY – The onslaught was inevitable, it was just a matter of whether Lackawanna men's basketball could keep up.

Unfortunately for the Falcons, the Colts were too much, as SUNY Orange kept up its torrid pace in the second half, out-muscling the Falcons to an 85-64 victory in non-region basketball action on Tuesday night in New York.

The Falcons (11-11) knew, as usual, things would be tough against the DII #25 Colts (16-3), but Lackawanna accounted for itself quite well in the first half, as the visitors kept more-or-less even with Orange throughout the first 20 minutes.

At the midway point of the first half, Orange held a 21-12 advantage and looked to try to pull away, but the Falcons kept fighting to keep things within striking distance. About four minutes later, a quick 13-4 spurt from Lackawanna brought the Falcons even at 29-all with under six minutes to go. In that run, Noah McIntosh (Philadelphia, PA) had seven of those points, knocking down a lay-up in transition, a mid-range jumper, and then a three-pointer in the corner to tie it up. Both teams went shot-for-shot in the last few minutes of the half, with Orange trying to pull away, and Lackawanna bringing them back. Evan Laybourn-Boddie (Scranton, PA) hit a three-pointer to tie things again at 36 with 3:30 to play. About a minute later, Laybourn-Boddie hit back-to-back lay-ups in transition to get the Falcons back within a point at 41-40, and he'd do it one more time to give Lackawanna a brief lead at 42-41 with two minutes to go in the first half. Orange would convert a three-point play to take a 44-42 lead into the break.

For all of Lackawanna's first half effort, the Falcons couldn't muster that same energy in the second. Orange came out firing after the break, forcing turnovers and quickly expanding their lead out to double-digits within the first three minutes. Lackawanna wouldn't be able to get any closer the rest of the way. Every time the Falcons looked to start to mount some sort of comeback, Orange would snuff it out, just as fast. The lead ballooned past 20 points late in the second half, as Orange kept the pressure up.

Lackawanna College was led by Laybourn-Boddie's game-high 25 points, while McIntosh added ten points.

Orange was led by Jabari Phillips with 21 points, while Daniel Lans added 20 points for the Colts.

The Falcons have a few days off before they leap back into action, taking on Raritan Valley CC on Tuesday, January 28th in Region XIX DII action. The game is set for a 7:00pm ET start inside the historic Lackawanna College Student Union gymnasium.
