WVB: Falcons Flourish In Tri-Match Sweep

Lackawanna Women's Volleyball Took Down Montgomery County CC and SUNY Westchester For A Pair Of Victories

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 9/7/24

SCRANTON, Pa. – The Falcons had little trouble to snag a pair of victories on in tri-match action on Saturday morning, as Lackawanna women's volleyball defeated Montgomery County CC and SUNY Westchester at the Lackawanna College Student Union gymnasium by identical 3-0 scores. The Falcons beat Montco by scores of 25-10, 25-11, and 25-16, then beat Westchester by scores of 25-5, 25-6, and 25-9.

The Falcons (5-1) opened the morning against their Eastern Pennsylvania Athletic Conference (EPAC) opponent, Region 19 DIII foe Montgomery County CC (1-1). It was the first match of the season for the Mustangs, and they showed a little rust out of the gate, as the Falcons shot out to an early 6-1 advantage in the first set. Lackawanna relied on service aces and timely kills to grow their lead out further, eventually taking a ten-point lead at 13-3 on a pretty combination from Maddilyn Durfee (Buffalo, NY) to Nadia Toth (Dalton, PA). Alasiah Carter (Coatesville, PA) won the first set when a Montco overpass came her way, and she rocketed a cross-court kill.

Set two saw the Falcons jump out once again to an early lead, highlighted by an Aryana Girvan (Clarion, PA) kill that made it 10-4, and put the Falcons on the serve. With Girvan doing the serving duties, Toth got a kill, then Girvan scored three straight points via ace, before Toth got another kill in the middle that made it 15-4. Eventually, Lackawanna found itself ahead by a 20-5 margin, and, after a brief flurry from Montco, the Falcons won the second set when Delaney Petri (Delevan, NY) put a kill off the block for the 25-11 margin.

Set three was tighter, as the Falcons built and held a five-to-six-point margin throughout. The set and match ended at 25-16, when Lackawanna got another Toth kill in the middle, helping the Falcons sweep past Montgomery County CC.

After Montco outlasted Westchester in a five-set thriller in the second match of the day, the Falcons and the Vikings (0-3) got together to close out proceedings.

The match was not particularly close, as the Falcons consistently used their serve to force the Vikings into mistakes, thrice building a double-digit lead thanks to early runs. The first set fittingly ended on a Delianie Del Bois (New Port Richey, FL) ace, the second on a net violation from Westchester, and the match itself wrapped up when a backline kill attempt went long for Westchester.

Lackawanna College gets back to work on Tuesday, September 10th, when the Falcons host the Titans from County College of Morris, the first time the two will play each other since they played for the Region XIX DII championship last season. The match is set for a 6:00pm ET start inside the Lackawanna College Student Union gymnasium.
