SCRANTON, Pa. – The Region XIX DII opener for 2024 pitted the defending champs against the team they defeated to win it all last season. The result didn't change, as Lackawanna College women's volleyball knocked off County College of Morris in a 3-0 (25-10, 25-11, 25-12) sweep on Tuesday evening inside the historic Lackawanna College Student Union gymnasium.
Â
The Falcons (6-1, 1-0) used big runs in all three sets to break things open against the Titans (0-2, 0-1). In set one, the visiting Titans were down 6-4 with the serve, but a deflection and a misplay let the Falcons break serve and go ahead 7-4.
Aryanna Girvan (Clarion, PA) stepped up to serve, put an ace down, and that was the start of seven straight points for the Falcons, who took a 13-4 lead into a timeout for the visitors. Later, with Lackawanna ahead 19-10 and serving, the Falcons finished the set, thanks in part to four service aces from
Angelique Fuentes (Miami, FL) and a kill from Girvan.
Â
In set two, the Titans had things as close as 6-5, but a serving error brought Girvan up to serve for Lackawanna, and the Falcons went on another tear. Girvan had two straight aces,
Neurdia Osias (Huntington Station, NY) added a kill, and an error pushed the Lackawanna lead to 11-5. Later, leading 14-7, Lackawanna won a long rally on a Fuentes kill down the pipe. That kickstarted a 7-0 spurt, which capped what had been a 15-2 scoring run to blow open the tight set at 21-7. Girvan got a chance to close out set two at 25-11, handing the Falcons the 2-0 lead.
Â
Set three saw Morris grab a slim lead at 2-1, and the Titans were down just 6-4 once again through the early going. A Carter kill broke the serve from Morris, and
Jana Hofmann (Colorado Springs, CO) came up to serve. An ace, a net violation, a hitting error, a kill from Girvan, a kill from Carter, a kill from Toth…it was all a part of a run of eight straight points that made it 14-4, Falcons. Eventually, the Falcons had things at match point, up 24-12, and got the win on a Hofmann kill through a block in the center.
Â
The Falcons have now won three straight matches and are 1-0 in Region XIX DII play. Their next contest is on Friday, September 13
th, when they play host to Delaware Tech CC in Region XIX DII action. It is set for a 5:00pm ET start inside the Lackawanna College Student Union gymnasium.
