SCRANTON, Pa. – The Lackawanna College Athletics Department is set to confirm the 2024 Lackawanna College women's volleyball schedule for the upcoming season.
Â
It will be another challenging schedule for head coach Shelby Reese, now in her third year in charge, as the Falcons look to improve upon their 14-win season from last year, which culminated in a Region XIX championship and a Mid-Atlantic District appearance.
Â
After a pre-season scrimmage against Marywood University, Lackawanna officially kicks off 2024 with a home match against Genesee CC on Friday, August 23
rd inside the historic Lackawanna Student Union gymnasium. That will be the first of eight straight home events, including a scrimmage against Keystone College and two tri-matches. It also includes a re-match from last year's Mid-Atlantic District Championship match, as Harford CC comes to town on Wednesday, September 4
th. In all, ten of the first 14 regular season matches for Lackawanna College will be at home.
Â
The first true road event of the regular season will be a tri-match at PSU Hazleton on Saturday, September 14
th, where the Falcons will face the hosts, as well as PSU Mont Alto. Lackawanna also has a tri-match at Lehigh Carbon CC with the host Cougars and Delaware County CC, as well as a road match at Cairn University to round out their September schedule.
Â
When the calendar flips to October, the schedule turns on its head, too, as the Falcons will only have two of their final nine matches at home. A road match at Montco on Wednesday, October 2
nd, is followed by a tri-match at Northampton CC against the Spartans and Delaware Tech on Saturday, October 5
th. The Falcons have another tri-match against Lehigh Carbon CC and Delaware County CC, this time in Media, PA, as well as roadies with Harcum College and the season finale, a road match against Harrisburg Area CC on Tuesday, October 22
nd. Before that, the Falcons have a pair of home games, hosting Northampton on October 16
th and Hagerstown on Friday, October 18
th, which will be the home finale.
Â
The potential postseason fate for the Falcons will then rest on how their regular season goes. Last year, Lackawanna was 7-9 just past the midway point of the season and struggling to find consistency. The Falcons rallied to finish strong, winning seven of their last eight matches, including a pair of wins in the Region XIX tournament, which secured the program's first Region XIX championship in 17 years.
Â
The Falcons had only first year players last year, so plenty of experience is expected to return, including top scorer
Angelique Fuentes (Miami, FL), who led the squad with over 200 kills last year.
Gabriela Gomez (Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic) was second on the team with just over 120 kills, and
Nadia Toth (East Benton, PA) and
Alasiah Carter (Coatesville, PA) were also both over 100 kills last year. Fuentes led the pack with over 50 service aces last year, and
Maddilyn Durfee (Buffalo, NY) had just under 500 assists to help orchestrate the offensive attack.
Â
All that returning experience, plus some talented incoming first year and transfer players, has coach Reese and company excited about the 2024 campaign.
