Lackawanna College Couldn't Get On Track Against The Visitors From Maryland In Non-Region Action

4/21/24

SCRANTON, Pa. – Lackawanna baseball couldn't quite keep the pace with visiting Harford CC, as the Fighting Owls knocked off the Falcons, 16-3, in seven innings at Scranton HS baseball field on Sunday afternoon.

The Falcons (20-21) actually held a 1-0 lead after the first inning, but the Division I Owls (39-9) used a sac fly in the second to tie the game, then scored the game's next 15 runs from the third inning to the sixth, pounding out 14 total hits, while striking out the opposition ten times.

Lackawanna took the lead in the bottom of the first on a ground out from Nick Matson (Redshirt First Year; Nanticoke, PA), scoring a run to make it 1-0, Falcons, but Harford immediately tied the game in the second. A leadoff double was followed by a single, then a sac fly to center. When Lackawanna stranded the bases loaded in the bottom of the second, Harford pounced in the top of the third, using a one-out single, followed by a walk and a hit-by-pitch, to load the bases. Two wild pitches scored a pair of runs, and then a three-run homer opened the flood gates at 6-1.

Harford scored four in the fourth, a run in the fifth, and five more in the sixth. Lackawanna got two back on a double from Michael Rickert (Sophomore; Moosic, PA), but a third run was thrown out at the plate. Lackawanna kept the Owls off the board in the seventh, but couldn't answer the bell in the bottom frame, ending the game early via run-rule.

Rickert was the lone Falcon with multiple hits, going 2-for-3 with a run scored and two RBI, while Matson, David Baltrusaitis (Sophomore; Tunkhannock, PA), Vincent Proietto (Sophomore; Drexel Hill, PA), Aydan McNelly (Sophomore; Limerick, PA), and Alex Gombocz (First Year; Georgetown, ON) all had a hit. Reymer Rodriguez (First Year; Bonao, Dominican Republic) was hit with the loss, giving up five runs on three hits in 2 1/3 innings pitched.

The road doesn't get easier for Lackawanna, as the Falcons will take on the #1 team in NJCAA DIII on Tuesday, April 23rd, when Northampton CC comes to town. First pitch is at 3:30pm ET at Scranton HS baseball field.
