WEST WINDSOR TWP., NJ. – The Falcons knew they'd be up against it, facing top-seed Mercer County CC on Friday evening in the Region XIX DII playoffs. And, without missing a beat, the top-ranked Vikings flexed their muscle, cruising to an 8-0 win in the semi-final match-up at home to end the Lackawanna men's soccer season.
The Falcons (4-6-0) came in as the fourth-seed, and were without a usual starter, so the margin for error was razor thin. Meanwhile, the Vikings (15-2-1) had little trouble, pumping four past the Falcons in the first half, including the first two within a minute of each other, at the 16
th and 17
th minutes of the contest. Mercer built a 4-0 lead at halftime, then expanded that lead with three goals in the first seven minutes of the second half, before scoring their eighth goal late in the half to round out the scoring.
Lackawanna fought hard and managed to get a shot on target in the 76
th minute, but that was really all the offense the Falcons could muster, as Mercer held possession most of the game in the Lackawanna defensive third.
The loss means the end of the road for Lackawanna men's soccer this season. The Falcons entered the season with a ton of uncertainty and ended up with four wins and ten games of action. Mercer moves on to play Essex County College in the Region XIX DII championship on Saturday, November 2
nd, at 2:00pm ET.
