BRANCHBURG, NJ --Â Lackawanna managed a split against two tough opponents on Saturday afternoon in tri-match action, as women's volleyball dropped a match to the hosts, Raritan Valley, 3-0 (28-26, 25-17, 25-16) before knocking off Bergen Community College in a five-set victory (25-20, 16-25, 18-25, 25-18, 15-8) in the last match of the afternoon in Branchburg, NJ.
Â
The Falcons (6-6) dropped the first match against Raritan Valley in straight sets, but pushed the Lions in the opening set. Trailing 16-12, Lackawanna rattled off six straight to take the lead over the Lions (13-2) at 18-16, helped along by a pair of service aces from
Alasiah Carter (First Year; Coatesville, PA), plus a kill. The Falcons and Lions traded points back and forth to force the set into extra points, but, eventually, it was Raritan that got the win, using a pair of service aces to end the set. From there, the match was a little more straightforward, with Raritan twice pulling away after early tight scores in the second and third sets to secure the sweep.
Â
In the second match, the Falcons were behind 2-1 entering the fourth set, but managed to rally against the Bulldogs (5-3) in the fourth set, expanding what had been a tight 18-16 lead with a 7-2 run in to win 25-18 and force a fifth set. In that decisive set, Bergen's mistakes began to mount, and the Falcons stayed steady. Eventually, Lackawanna managed to break open what had been a tight set and sprint to the finish, winning 15-8 to earn the split.
