SCRANTON, Pa. – Lackawanna College scored the final eight points in the fifth and deciding set, completing a wild comeback for the 3-2 (23-25, 23-25, 25-18, 25-17, 15-10) victory on Thursday night in women's volleyball action against Lehigh Carbon CC at the Lackawanna College Student Union gymnasium.
Â
The Falcons (3-3) fell behind 2-0 after a pair of narrow losses, then managed to find their groove in the next two sets to tie things up, but, when Lehigh Carbon took a 10-7 lead, the largest for either side in the fifth set, it seemed like the comeback was destined to fall short.
Â
But Lackawanna had some fight left. A serve error gave the Falcons serve, and
Gabriela Gomez (First Year; Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic) got a kill on a looping attempt that the Cougars couldn't handle to cut it to one.
Maddilyn Durfee (First Year; Buffalo, NY) got a service ace to tie things up, and then
Angelique Fuentes (First Year; Miami, FL) got a kill to give the Falcons the lead at 11-10 and force a timeout.
Â
That timeout didn't stop the Falcons, as Durfee got another ace, followed by a tandem block from
Zaliyah Small (First Year; Scranton, PA) and Gomez, a kill from Fuentes on an overpass, and match-point from a Gomez solo block to give the Falcons the thrilling victory.
Â
Lackawanna College has now won three-straight, and the Falcons will look to keep things going with a tri-match on Saturday, September 16
th, when the Falcons are set to host Delaware Tech and Chesapeake College in the Lackawanna College Student Union gymnasium. Lackawanna is set to face Delaware Tech at 10:00am ET, and Chesapeake at 2:00pm ET.
