NEWARK, Del. --Â After a drubbing at the hands of nationally ranked Northampton CC, Lackawanna College bounced back with an impressive road win on Saturday morning in Region XIX DII play, knocking off Delaware Tech, 3-1 (25-14, 25-23, 27-29, 25-22) in four sets.
Â
The Falcons (10-9, 5-0) stayed unbeaten with the win in Division II play, and clinched the top-seed in the Region XIX DII playoffs in two weeks, guaranteeing that the road to the Region XIX title runs through Scranton.
Â
After taking a 2-0 match lead, the Falcons were in trouble when Delaware Tech (7-10, 3-3) rallied to take the third set in dramatic fashion, 29-27, stopping the Falcons from set and match point late to force a fourth set. But Lackawanna bounced back quickly in the fourth, jumping out to an early 3-0 lead thanks in part to an ace from
Maddilyn Durfee (First Year; Buffalo, NY) and a hitting error on Del Tech. The home side rallied to take a brief 8-7 lead, but the Falcons tied the set, then took the lead on back-to-back aces from
Alasiah Carter (First Year; Coatesville, PA) to make it 10-8. A Del Tech kill made it 10-9, but the Falcons then went on an 8-2 run, highlighted by back-to-back kills from
Nadia Toth (First Year; East Benton, PA) and
April Martindell (First Year; Pocono Mountain, PA), as well as service aces from Durfee and
Zoe Ortueta (First Year; Miami, FL). The hosts eventually tied the set at 21-all, but a service error put the Falcons in front, and a key service ace from
Gabriela Gomez (First Year; Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic) made it a two-point advantage. An
Angelique Fuentes (First Year; Miami, FL) kill got the Falcons on the doorstep, and a hitting error form Del Tech clinched the win for the visitors.
