MBB: SUNY Orange Squeezes Past Lackawanna With Second Half Burst

The Colts Used A Killer 18-3 Run In The Second Half To Take Complete Control Of An Otherwise Tight Game

Box Score 1/26/23

MIDDLETOWN, NY -- Lackawanna College men's basketball put together another good first half of basketball, going toe-to-toe with the #5 team in the land on Thursday night. Unfortunately, the Falcons didn't have the horses to keep up with the Colts, as fifth-ranked SUNY Orange slowly, but surely, pulled away from Lackawanna for an 85-67 victory in Middletown, NY.

After initially falling behind 8-2, the Falcons (11-7) steadily climbed back into the game, using their pressure defense and getting contributions from multiple spots to take a 16-14 lead around the midway point of the first half. That woke the Colts (18-0) up, as SUNY Orange hit the gas pedal and started to beat the Falcons on the break. That being said, the Falcons found some footing and kept things relatively close until Orange hit a 12-2 run to close the half and lead 38-29 at the break.

The Colts led 44-33 just two minutes in after halftime, but back-to-back Falcon threes cut the lead to five at the 16:39 mark of the second half. After some more back-and-forth, a spinning lay-up in transition from Caleb Mims (Bethlehem, PA) made it 46-43 with under 16 to play. The Falcons wouldn't get any closer, though, as the Colts hit a killer 18-3 over the next few minutes of game time, expanding their lead out to 64-46 past the midway point of the second half, and cruising into victory from there. The Falcons wouldn't really get closer than 12 the rest of the way.

With the loss, the Falcons have now dropped four straight. Lackawanna College will get a slight break before they come back home for the first time in three games on Tuesday, January 31st, when they host Central Penn College out of the USCAA. That game is set for a 6:00pm ET tip-off inside the Lackawanna Student Union gymnasium.
