WVB: Delaware Tech Blanks Lackawanna College

Delaware Tech Overpowered Lackawanna College Throughout the Afternoon

Box Score 9/10/22

SCRANTON, Pa. – The Terry Hawks of Delaware Tech used their size, and strength to power over, through, and right by Lackawanna College on their way to a 3-0 sweep on Saturday afternoon at the Lackawanna College Student Union.

The Falcons (1-1) couldn't muster a ton of offense through the three sets, but scratched and clawed to make Delaware Tech earn every point. Hunter Heeman (New Milford, PA) led the way with a team-high six kills, five coming in the third set, while Melanie Pinillos (Miami, FL) added a pair, and Makayla Jones (Weatherford, TX) also had a kill.

Set 1 (Delaware Tech 25 – 16 Lackawanna College)
The first set was a cagey affair early, as both teams traded points and errors back and forth. A hitting error from Del Tech gave the Falcons serve, with Lackawanna trailing 4-3, but the serve was broken on a hitting error, and the Terry Hawks ran off 12 straight points to blow things open at 16-3.

The Falcons scored four straight thanks to some errors from Del Tech to cut it to 16-7, but the Terry Hawks got a kill and a service ace as part of another four-point run to make it 20-7.

With the score at 23-10, Lackawanna College went on a mini 6-1 run to cut the gap to 24-16, thanks to a handful of hitting errors and a net violation from the opposition. The Terry Hawks would claim the first set, though, when a hitting error on the Falcons ended things at 25-16.

Set 2 (Delaware Tech 25 – 12 Lackawanna College)
The Falcons fell behind 5-0, but were able to cut the deficit to 6-4 early in the second set, again thanks to some errors from the Terry Hawks.

Later, with the game still relatively close at 10-7, a hitting error from the Falcons broke serve, and sparked what was a 6-0 run that blew things open at 16-7.

Both teams traded points back-and-forth until, with the score 20-12, Del Tech rattled off five straight points, three coming on kills, and took set two at 25-12.

Set 3 (Delaware Tech 25 – 16 Lackawanna College)
Despite being overmatched, the Falcons fought hard in the third set. A Hunter Heeman kill, just her second and only the third of the match for the Falcons, made it 2-1, Falcons early on. A few errors, a service ace, and a pair of kills from Del Tech made it 6-2, and the lead got to 8-3 before another Heeman kill for the Falcons.

With the score 11-7, Lackawanna had a good run, with a Heeman kill, followed by a Jones kill, to cut things to 11-9. A few Falcon errors put Del Tech up four again, but a pair of kills from Heeman, followed by a kill from Pinillos after a hitting error from Lackawanna, put the Falcons behind at 14-12.

But Delaware Tech, as they did so often through the afternoon, started forcing errors, and ballooned the lead out to 18-12 before the Falcons called a timeout. A few Del Tech errors made it 18-14, but the Terry Hawks hit a killer 5-0 run to put themselves up 23-14.

From there, the Falcons managed to score a pair of points on a few errors, but a kill from Delaware Tech ended things at 25-16, giving the Terry Hawks the win and handing the Falcons their first loss on the young season.
