SCRANTON, Pa. – Despite the brisk, less-than-enjoyable spring weather, Lackawanna College's bats provided the heat, as the Falcons scored four runs in the first inning to take a lead they would never surrender, on their way to a 9-1 victory over the Montgomery County CC Mustangs in a Region XIX Divisional Crossover match-up on Wednesday afternoon at Scranton HS.
Â
The Falcons (21-12) got a strong outing from
Jason Carpenter, and coupled that up with a big first inning that put Lackawanna in front, putting Montgomery County on their heels right out of the gate.
Â
After a 1-2-3 top of the first,
Cody Fleischer led the bottom frame off with a double to left field, right out of the gate.
Daniel Helfgott drew a walk to put two on, and then a hotshot from
Quinn Hanafin back to the pitcher bounced into the infield, loading the bases with nobody out.
Daniel Keenan put the Falcons in front with a two-run single, still with nobody out. Later, now with one away,
Eli Riley smacked a two-run double to put the Falcons up 4-0 in the first.
Â
From there,
Jason Carpenter combined with
Dan Petrouskie and
Mason Drummond to hold the Mustangs off the scoreboard through eight innings. Carpenter went four innings to pick up the win.
Derrick Newman came on to pitch the ninth and surrendered one run before closing the game out. The Falcons added single runs in the third and fourth innings, then two more in the seventh, and another run in the eighth, to come away with the victory.
Â
Lackawanna College now sets its sights on a Friday, April 29
th match-up with Mercer County CC in Region XIX play. The doubleheader of action will take place at Scranton High's baseball field, with first pitch of the first game scheduled for 1:00pm ET.
