BSB: Falcons Remain Perfect In Region XIX Play With Pair Of Shut-Out Victories

SCHNECKSVILLE, Pa. – The Lackawanna College baseball team remained perfect in Region XIX play with a pair of impressive shut-out victories over Lehigh Carbon CC on Wednesday afternoon. The Falcons scored nine runs in the first inning en route to a 19-0 win in game one, followed by a six-run first inning in game two, on their way to a 15-0 win in the second game.
 
The Falcons (15-8, 6-0) struck out a combined 26 batters over the course of the two games, allowing just seven hits and walking just one batter. Meanwhile, at the dish, Lackawanna College pounded out a combined 39 hits, 14 total extra base hits, including eight doubles and three homeruns. The Falcons also stole a combined 25 bases in both games, constantly putting pressure on the Cougars.
 
Game One Recap: Lackawanna College 19 – 0 Lehigh Carbon CC
Lackawanna College scored nine runs in the first inning, and 17 total runs in the first three innings, winning the first game of the doubleheader 19-0 on Wednesday afternoon. The Falcons scored their 19 runs on 21 hits, hitting seven extra base hits, including three triples, two homeruns, and two doubles, while stealing 12 bases and reaching base on six hit-by-pitches.
 
Lackawanna College (14-8, 5-0) was led by Cody Fleischer, who went 2-for-3 with four RBIs and three runs scored, including a three-run homerun, while Eli Riley went 3-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs scored, including a two-run triple. Daniel Keenan went 2-for-4 with three RBIs and two runs, and Spencer Butz was 3-for-3 with two runs scored and an RBI. Ty Morris got the win, going four innings, giving up just two hits, and striking out seven batters.
 
The Falcons scored nine runs in the top of the first inning, wasting little time. A Riley RBI single, followed by a Keenan two-run double, made it 3-0 Falcons with two outs. A two-run triple from Zachary Walsh made it 5-0, and, as the line-up turned over, a Daniel Helfgott RBI single had the Falcons ahead 6-0. Fleischer finished the scoring with a three-run blast, putting the Falcons ahead 9-0 after one.
 
Lackawanna added more in the second, when a two-out RBI single from Spencer Butz put another run on the board, and they'd add seven more in the third. A one-out triple from Fleischer scored a run, and Riley tripled right after to make it 12-0, Falcons. Quinn Hanafin singled Riley home, and George Castro reached on an error, which brought Hanafin home, making it 14-0, Falcons. A Keenan RBI single made it 15-0, and Julian Thompson hit a two-out double that scored another pair of runs, making it 17-0, Falcons, after two-and-a-half innings.
 
The Cougars (1-9, 0-7) finally got something going in the bottom of the fourth, when a one-out walk put a baserunner on. A wild pitch, followed by a single, and a hit-by-pitch, loaded the bases with two away, but Morris got a fielder's choice to end the inning and get out of trouble unscathed.
 
In the bottom of the fifth, with Matthew Stam on in relief, the Cougars once again were cooking, this time with runners on second and third and two away, but Stam got a big punch out to end the threat.
 
The Falcons put a few more runs on in the seventh, courtesy of a solo homer from Jacob Simpson, followed by a a passed ball allowing another runner across, making it 19-0, Falcons. Lackawanna had the bases loaded with one out, but a pair of pop-ups ended the scoring threat, and Phil Dull came on to close out the seventh and give the Falcons the win.

Game two went pretty much the same for the Falcons, as they piled on six runs in the first and slowly widened the gap the rest of the way, coming out with a 15-0 win in the second game of the doubleheader against Lehigh Carbon CC.
 
The Falcons (15-8, 6-0) had 18 total hits, including seven extra base hits, six of which were doubles, and stole 13 bases as a team. Jacob Simpson went 2-for-3 with four RBIs and two runs, including a two-run double, while Eric Ludwick went 3-for-4 with two RBIs and a run scored, and Cody Fleischer was 2-for-3 with two runs scored and an RBI. Marc DeNunzio got the win, going three innings and giving up three hits while striking out seven batters.
 
Lackawanna College picked up where it left off in game one, scoring quickly in the top of the first inning. Fleischer doubled home Helfgott to put the Falcons in front, and Eli Riley singled home Fleischer to make it 2-0, Falcons. Riley came around to score, courtesy of an error by the catcher. Later in the inning, Matthew Stam launched a two-run homer to make it 5-0, and David Curreri hit a two-out double to drive in another run, making it 6-0, Falcons.
 
DeNunzio gave up a lead-off single, then retired three in a row, including a pair of strikeouts. He'd step up again in the bottom of the second, pitching around a double with three strikeouts.
 
The Falcons tacked on another run in the top of the third, when Ludwick doubled in a run to make it 7-0, and the Falcons put three more on the board in the fourth, courtesy of a two-run double from Simpson, and an RBI single from Phil Dull. After the top of the fourth, the Falcons led 10-0.
 
Samuel Daniels came on to pitch in the bottom of the fourth, and picked up where DeNunzio left off, retiring the side in order. Daniels would pitch around a single in the bottom of the fifth, and the Falcons led 10-0 after five.
 
A Ludwick single in the top of the sixth stretched the lead out to 11-0, Falcons, and Keon Burkholder came on in the bottom of the sixth, where he struck out the side, swinging, in short order.
 
With the bases loaded in the top of the seventh, a passed ball brought one run home, and a Simpson two-run single scored another pair, making it 14-0, Falcons. Cole Casamento brought another run home, making it 15-0, Falcons.
 
Lehigh Carbon (1-10, 0-8) finally had something cooking in the bottom of the seventh with a pair of base runners, courtesy of some hit-by-pitches, but Burkholder struck out the last batter looking, sending the Falcons to their seventh win in their last eight games.
 
The Falcons get back to work on Friday, April 15th, when they travel to Connecticut to take on UConn Avery Point in doubleheader action. The first game is scheduled for 1:00pm ET in Groton, CT, and the second will follow around 4:00pm ET.
