LOCH SHELDRAKE, NY – The Lackawanna College men's basketball team faced SUNY Sullivan in their final regular season game, and the #3 Generals showed exactly why they are so highly ranked, with a 97-67 victory over the Falcons on Thursday night.
Â
The Falcons (8-16) struggled from the field, making just two three-point shots on the night, while SUNY Sullivan hit five threes in the first half alone, on their way to 48 first half points, building a double-digit lead that the Falcons would not be able to overcome.
Â
The Generals (21-3) won their ninth straight game, and placed five players in double-figures, led by Jalen Reneau's 20 points, while Kareem Welch added 19 points. The Falcons got a season-high 25 points from
Nashawn Johnson, who was the only Lackawanna player to score in double-figures.
Â
Lackawanna managed to score quickly on two possessions, matching the early pace from the Generals, but Sullivan, after falling behind 4-2, hit a 12-2 run in the blink of an eye to make it 14-6 with 16:19 in the first half, forcing a timeout from the Falcons. It would be a lead that they would never surrender.
Â
Out of the timeout, the Falcons would hit a small 6-0 run to close in at 14-12, with four straight points coming from
Nashawn Johnson. Sullivan would hit their own run of 8-0 to go back up by ten, and the Falcons fought hard over the next few minutes to try to keep the deficit from growing beyond that.
Â
The Falcons were getting looks from three, but they just couldn't convert, and a Generals three-pointer made it 29-16 with just over nine minutes to go in the half. That three started another 8-0 run for Sullivan, extending their lead to 34-18 with 6:44 to go.
Â
Another Sullivan run would get the Generals out to a 42-22 lead with 3:32 to play. Every time the Falcons got a bucket, it felt like Sullivan hit three or four shots to answer. The Generals took a 48-30 lead into the half.
Â
Two minutes into the second half,
Nashawn Johnson had scored his seventh straight point for Lackawanna College, but the issue was that for every Johnson make, the Generals were answering. After an
Ahmir Ellzy runner made it 57-39, Sullivan started to stretch their lead, hitting a 7-0 run to make it 64-39 with 16:34 to play in the game.
Â
The Falcons would get it underneath 20 points once again, making it 66-47 with 14:10 to go, but a big three-point play off of a loose ball helped Sullivan extend the lead back out. That started a 12-1 run for the Generals, making it a 30-point deficit at the midway point of the second half.
Â
The Sullivan lead would yo-yo back-and-forth the rest of the way, with the Falcons getting it as close as 24 before the Generals got it back out to the final margin.
Â
In addition to Johnson's 25,
Ahmir Ellzy and
Brandon Scott each added eight points apiece, while
David Pope,
Daryl Coleman, and
Gabe Springer all had six points.
Â
The Falcons will get some time to rest up and recover, with a Region XIX playoff game next on the docket, next Thursday, February 24
th. Lackawanna College's opponent has not been determined, as of yet, but the Falcons will be on the road.Â
