WSOC: #19 Sussex CC Too Much For Lackawanna College

The Skylanders Pumped Ten Goals Past The Falcon Defense

9-28-21

SCRANTON, Pa. – The Lackawanna College Women's Soccer team ran up against another quality opponent in their 2021 campaign, this time in the form of nationally ranked Sussex CC. The Skylanders scored early and often in their 10-0 win at Loyola Field on Tuesday afternoon.

Sussex CC (5-2-0) got a hat-trick from Sophie Taylor, who opened the scoring in the 4th minute of the contest. The Skylanders would pump five first half goals past the Lackawanna College (0-4-0) defense, with five more (including a Falcon own-goal) to come in the second half.

With the ball firmly planted in the offensive third, Sussex hit the front in the fourth minute when Taylor put home a cross past a diving Sophia Andreoli to make it 1-0.

Lackawanna would settle in a little further, but the Skylanders would find the net again in the 16th minute when Blaine Vallorosi touched a pass to Paula Herold, who uncorked a laser that Andreoli couldn't punch back out of the net.

Taylor would get her second goal in the 28th minute on a gorgeous through-ball from Melania Scuralli after the Falcons failed to clear a corner kick, which made it 3-0. The Skylanders would add two more before the half ended.

Lackawanna College continued to spend the match on their defensive foot after the halftime break, and Sussex picked up where they left off in the 57th minute, when the Skylanders took advantage of an aggressive backline from Lackawanna to loft a pass out to Vallorosi, who played Taylor in one-on-one with the keeper. Taylor lofted a ball over Andreoli's out-stretched left hand to make it 6-0 and give herself a hattrick for the match.

The Falcons would have a disastrous two-minute stretch where they would give up three goals, including an inadvertent deflection off a defender into their own net, before Rebecca Kopf would make it ten for the Skylanders in the 74th minute.

Sussex outshot Lackawanna College 33-to-4, with 24 of those shots on target. Taylor finished with three goals and an assist, while Vallarosi finished with a goal and three assists. Sophia Andreoli had 14 saves for the Falcons. Both Rachel Apsley and Aliyah Shade had shots on goal for Lackawanna College.

Lackawanna College is back in action on Saturday October 2nd at 12:00pm at Hagerstown CC in Hagerstown, MD, as part of a doubleheader with the men's team.
