WEST POINT, NY – After falling behind 35-24 with six minutes to play, the Lackawanna College Falcons stormed back and scored the game-winning touchdown with 2.9 seconds remaining to knock off the Army JV Black Knights 39-35 at historic Michie Stadium on Monday night.
Â
Quarterback
Barry Brown found wide receiver
Colbie Young on a 29-yard touchdown pass down the left sideline between three Black Knight defenders at the goal line with 2.9 seconds remaining in the game. It capped a furious rally from eleven points down with 6:29 to play.
Â
It was the most important touchdown of the five thrown by
Barry Brown, who helped the Falcons (2-1) to their first true road win of the season. It was the first time the Falcons had faced a service academy-affiliated team since 2015.
Â
The game started with a bang, when the Falcons muffed a punt inside their own five-yard line, allowing Army to recover and run it in to make it 7-0 with 10:12 to play in the first quarter. The Falcons responded quickly, as
Barry Brown hit
Delvin Palmer for an 81-yard touchdown pass to tie it up with 9:23 remaining, only to have Army JV strike right back on a 72-yard touchdown pass of their own, putting the Black Knights up 14-7 with 8:30 to play in the 1
st quarter.
Â
From there, both teams traded turnovers-on-downs as the game creeped into the second quarter. The Falcons would mount a drive from their own 22-yard line, scoring on a 10-yard touchdown pass from
Barry Brown to
Jasiah Purdie, making it 14-all with 9:10 to play in the 2
nd quarter.
Â
After an Army touchdown drive, the Falcons drove back down the field, where Cam Ceccotti kicked a 36-yard field goal to make it a 21-17 Army lead with 3:01 to play in the half.
Â
The Falcons forced a quick three-and-out, and hit big with another
Barry Brown to
Delvin Palmer connection, this time for 78-yards, giving the Falcons a 24-21 lead with 90 seconds remaining in the half. Army JV missed a 30-yard FG to tie as time expired on the first half.
Â
The second half was a bit slower for both teams, with the Falcons and Black Knights trading punts and turnovers-on-down. Army JV then mounted a classic Black Knight drive, where they marched for 13 plays, spanning ten minutes over the 3
rd and 4
th quarters, and scoring on a 13-yard run to make it 28-24 with 9:13 to play. It would be a disastrous few minutes for Lackawanna College, as Army JV sprung a surprise onside kick and recovered it. Even though the Black Knights went three-and-out, Lackawanna College would throw an interception, and Army JV would return it to the Falcon 1-yard line, punching it in on the next play to make it 35-24 with 6:29 to play.
Â
Lackawanna College would dig deep, and
Barry Brown would find
Cohen Russell on a deep pass into Army JV territory, down to the five-yard line, before tossing his fourth touchdown of the game, this time to
Colbie Young. A
Barry Brown two-point conversion would make it 35-32 with 5:23 to play.
Â
After a failed Lackawanna College onside kick, Army JV would pick up a few first downs, and, seemingly, were gifted the game on a Lackawanna College offside penalty with 1:25 to play. The Falcons would hold Army to one yard on the next two plays, while using their final two timeouts, and got a big third down stop to force the punt team on the field. Army JV would run the clock down to 35 seconds before calling a timeout, but the punter would fumble the snap after the timeout, gifting Lackawanna College the ball on their own 46-yard line with 30.5 seconds to play.
Â
After a defensive pass interference put the ball at the Army JV 38-yard line, the Falcons got a nine-yard pass to
Joshua Dodd, who promptly stepped out of bounds with nine seconds to play, setting up the exciting, last-second play to win the game.
Â
The Falcons have a short-turnaround, as they play host to McDougle Technical Institute on Saturday, October 2
nd, at 1:00pm at Scranton Memorial Stadium. It'll be the home-opener for Lackawanna College. Pay attention to Lackawannafalcons.com for game day information.
