BETHLEHEM, PA – The Lackawanna College Men's Soccer team conceded a game-winning goal in the 85
th minute of their game against Northampton CC, allowing the Spartans to take the 2-1 win on Saturday afternoon.
The Falcons (0-2-1) fell behind in the fifth minute against Northampton (1-2-0), as the Spartans broke through the defensive line and drew a foul in the box, earning a penalty kick. Hatungimana Salem beat Lackawanna College keeper
Matthew Pfohl on the spot kick, and gave Northampton CC a 1-0 advantage.
Lackawanna College would settle back in, and push forward into the midfield with possession. Eventually, the Falcons would find their equalizer late in the first half, after
Bitakuja Ndizeye dispossessed a Spartan player and fired a long pass downfield that found the foot of
Noah Barton, who dribbled to the edge of the box and fired a floater over the keeper and into the net in the 43
rd minute.
Both teams went into the break even, and that's where things stood for most of the second half. The Falcons managed a few near-misses, with some crosses skittering across the face of goal just ahead of pursuing Lackawanna College forwards. But, the breakthrough would come for the Spartans instead, as Salem scored the match-winner in the 86
th minute to go ahead 2-1.
Lackawanna College had a free kick from about 35 yards out with time winding down, but the clock would run out before the Falcons could get set to really challenge the keeper.
Northampton keeper Koda Whalen faced ten shots on goal, coming up with nine saves for the Spartans. Pfohl finished with seven saves on the nine shots on goal that he saw.
The Falcons are back in action on Thursday September 23
rd, when they travel to Bryn Mawr, PA to take on Harcum College. The kick is set for 1:00pm, and will be part of a doubleheader with the women's team, who will play at 3:00pm. If there is a video livestream, we will post the link to watch.
