Lackawanna Finishes Regular Season with Win

Box Score May 9, 2021

Scranton, PA - Sunday afternoon the Lackawanna College baseball team ended their regular season with a scheduled nine-inning game against Rowan College South Jersey - Gloucester Campus. However, mother nature revised those plans by shortening the game to a five-inning rain abbreviated contest. Fortunately for the Falcons, they held a 7-5 lead after the five complete innings to give them a win.

Lackawanna took the initial lead when they scored two runs in the bottom of the first inning. The Falcons scored their first run when Brandon Ernst and Raymond Vorhees pulled off a double steal allowing Vorhees to score from third. They put an addition run on the board when Ernst subsequently scored on a Quinn Hanafin ground out. The Road Runners rebounded with five in the top of the second to take the lead. Not to be outdone, the Falcons' George Castro answered with a three-run home run in the bottom of the third to tie. In the fourth inning, Brandon Ernst gave Lackawanna the lead when he plated two runs with a double. Neither team scored in the fifth. In the sixth, RCSJ took the lead when the weather conditions helped them score three runs as the field conditions started to turn sloppy. After the second Falcon fielder slipped and fell chasing fly balls and their hurler found it challenging to control a moist pitch, the umpire called the game. Under the rules, the score reverted to the last full inning, the fifth, which gave the Falcons the win.

Brandon Ernst and George Castro led the Lackawanna batters. Ernst had a multi-hit game with two doubles with a line score of 3-2-3-2. Castro also had a multi-hit contest with a single and home run; his line score was 2-1-2-3.

Kyle Borrello received credit for the win and Justin Gohsler a save.

Lackawanna's next game is Friday, when they play in the Region 19 Division II double-elimination tournament. Lackawanna will host the tourney with games played at the Scranton High School baseball field.
