Scranton, PA -Â Friday evening the Lackawanna College baseball team played Delaware Technical Community College in the second round of the Region 19 Division II Baseball Tournament. Although Del-Tech scored the game's initial run in the first the Falcons responded in the bottom of the frame to take a 5-1 lead on their way to a 9-3 victory.
Del Tech took the early lead in the first inning with a home run to center. Rayond Vorhees doubled and
Brandon Ernst walked to set up a
Cody Fleischer three-run blast in the bottom of the inning. That wouldn't be all the runs scored by Lackawanna in the inning.
George Castro reached on an error,
Colin Macko followed with a single, a double steal set the stage for a
Quinn Hanafin two-run single to give Lackawanna a 5-1 lead. In the third, Delaware cut into the Falcon lead with two runs. Both teams remained scoreless to the bottom of the sixth when Jacob DiCesare doubled in Ernst to increase the Lackawanna lead to 6-3. In the seventh, Jensel Soto led off the inning with a triple.
Matthew Nyce followed base on balls. The big hit of the frame came next off the bat
Jacob Kelchner, a two-run triple. In the same inning, Vorhees followed with an RBI infield hit to score Kelchner to give Lackawanna a 9-3 lead. For the next two innings, both pitching staffs held their opponents scoreless to give the Falcons the win.
With the win Lackawanna moves into Region's Championship bracket to play the winner of tomorrow's elimination game between Sussex County Community College and Delaware-Technical Community College. First pitch for that contest is scheduled for 3:00 pm, at Scranton High School's baseball field.
In tonight's game Lackawanna recorded five extra-base hits, a double by both
Raymond Vorhees and Jacob DiCesare, a triple by both
Jacob Kelchner and
Jesnel Soto, a home run by
Cody Fleischer. The Falcons also had three players who provided multi-hit games, Kelchner (4-1-2-2) Vorhees (5-1-2-1), and Fleischer (3-1-2-3)
Kyle Scott, the winning pitcher, hurled six innings while relinquishing three runs on seven hits and striking out seven. Both Daniel Petrouskie and
Matthew Stam pitched in relief, with Petrouskie shutting out Del Tech on one hit over one inning and Stam blanking DTCC on no hits over two innings.
