Lackawanna claims Region 19 Division II Championship

Box Score May 15, 2021

Scranton, PA - On Saturday afternoon the Lackawanna College Falcons bested Delaware Technical Community College 22-8 to claim the Region 19 Division II Baseball Championship.

Lackawanna took an early lead in the Region 19 Division II Championship game against Delaware Technical Community College. Jacob Kelchner led off the Falcons' order with a double, moved to third on a passed ball and scored on Raymond Vorhee's sacrifice fly.  Brandon Ernst followed with a base hit advanced to second and third on two passed balls and scored on Colin Macko's triple leaving Lackawanna with 2-0 lead after the first inning.

In the second, Del-Tech answered with five runs on singles by Dylan Nibblett, Michael Pagliei and Matthew Marandola, and a double by Samuel Muniz. In the bottom of the inning, Kelchner blasted a three-run homer to right to tie the score at 5-5.

In the top of the third, Del-Tech retook the lead when Lackawanna's starter Kyle Borollo balked in a run. For the third consecutive innings, the Falcons answered with a run-producing at-bat when George Castro drilled a three-run dinger into left center.

Del-Tech again bounced back in the fourth when Marandola drove in a run with a sacrifice fly after Borollo started the inning with a leadoff walk. Again answering the Del-Tech score, Vorhees led off their half of the inning with a double, followed by a two-run Brandon Ernst homer to left. After a German Vasquez walk, Castro struck his second two-run homer to left center. Quinn Hanafin followed Castro with a solo dinger. Later in the frame Raymond Vorhees contributed the Falcons' third three-run homer of the contest and the third homer of the inning to give them a 16-7 going into the fifth.

From the fifth inning on the Lackawanna bullpen held Del-Tech in check for the rest of the contest. The only exception being a run in their half of the eighth when Marandola doubled. The Falcons scored four runs in the sixth on a Vorhees bases-loaded base on balls, an Ernst two-run single and a Fleischer RBI single. In the seventh, Lackawanna completed their scoring when runs scored on Vorhees' single, and Jalen Thompson's ground out.

The Lackawanna hitters recorded nine extra-base hits, a double each by Kelchner, Vorhees, and DiCesare; a triple by Colin Macko and homers by Kelchner, Vorhees, Ernst, Hanafin, and two by Castro. The Falcons also had six multi-hit performances provided by Kelchner (4-4-2-3), Vorhees (5-3-3-6), Ernst (6-2-3-4), Castro (4-2-2-5), and Soto (3-2-3-0).

Lackawanna's starter, Kyle Borrello hurled four innings, relinquishing seven runs on six hits. The relief staff, Cameron King, Justin Gohsler, Nick Termini, Sam Daniels and Jaden Tabler combined to hold Del-Tech on one run over the remaining five innings on four hits while striking out six.

With the win, the Falcons will host the winner of tomorrow's game between the University of Connecticut Avery Point and Monroe College for the East District Championship Series. The series is a best of three tourneys played at Scranton High School field next Friday and Saturday. Game time is yet to be determined.
