Lackawanna Claim their First Doubleheader Win of the 2021 Season

Dobson, NC - For the second consecutive weekend, the Lackawanna College baseball team traveled to North Carolina to avoid the cold and get in some ball games. Today's trip took the Falcons to Surry Community College, where Lackawanna claimed both games of a doubleheader.

They relied on the long ball and shutout pitching to claim a 10-0 victory in the opener. The Falcons recorded 10 hits in the game, with seven going for extra-base hits. Jake Kelchner and Ray Voorhees both struck solo homers in the third, while Cesar Castro slammed a two-run homer in the fourth. Lackawanna's right fielders, starter George Castro and his substitute JohnHeltebran contributed three doubles and four RBIs from that position. Castro had two doubles in his three at-bats with two runs batted in. while Heltebran struck a two-run double in his only plate appearance The team's other double cane in the first when Colin Macko doubled and then scored the first run of the game on QuinnHanafin's second-inning single.

The starter Kyle Scott, the winning pitcher, Dan Petrouskie held the SurryKnights scoreless, each giving up a solo hit.

In the nightcap, Surry went ahead 2-1 through two innings. However, the hot bat of Ray Voorhees turned the game in the third when he struck his second homer of the day, a two-run blast giving Lackawanna a 3-2 lead. The Falcons would increase that lead to 8-2 in the fifth when they scored five runs. Highlighting the inning was Colin Macko's two-run double and Jesnel Soto's double that scored Macko. Surry scored three in the sixth, but it was too little and too late as the Falcons walked away with an 8-5 win.

The Lackawanna nine take the field next Friday when they travel to the Community College of Baltimore Essex branch to play in a 12:00 PM doubleheader.
