Newton NJ - Sunday afternoon Lackawanna College football played its first game since its 2019 National Championship appearance. It was also the first game played by Sussex County Community College in its school history. The Falcons recorded 364 total yards while holding the Skylanders to 88 yards in securing a 37-7 game victory.
The offense started slowly as the Falcons put up only six points in the opening period. However, those six points came spectacularly as freshman quarterback Barry Brown hit Delvan Palmer on a 69-yard touchdown pass on Lackawanna's first offensive play of the contest. During the 2019 season Palmer scored a TD on the opening kickoff return of that season. However, due to a bad snap the Falcons missed an opportunity to put another point on the scoreboard.
Neither team scored again until Isaiah Edwards went on a 59-yard sprint to place an additional six points on the board with 12:08 left in the second quarter. Cameron Ceccotti then scored his first of four PATs that he would kick in the game. The Falcons closed out the scoring in that quarter with a 21 yard Antwan Squire touchdown jaunt with 3:06 left in the period and a Barry Brown 14 yard rush with 43 seconds left in the first half.
Lackawanna would only score once in the third period. It came on another Edwards TD sprint from 11 yards out. The score came with 1:09 left in the third period. Edwards would have a special day in that not only did he score twice, but he also recorded 134 yards rushing in eight attempts.
The defense did their job holding Sussex to five first downs, 18 yards passing and 70 yards rushing. The only mistake of the day is when they let the Skylander quarterback escape containment and score on a 42-yard run.
The Falcons concluded the day's scoring when Ceccotti booted a 35-yard field goal with a little more than a minute left in the game.
Lackawanna will return to the field on April 10th, when they host Snow College from Ephraim, UT at home.
