Lackawanna Baseball Splits with Monroe

Box Score March 20, 2021

Dunmore, PA - Saturday afternoon the Lackawanna College Baseball team split its opening home doubleheader with Monroe College winning the opener 7-3 before losing in the nightcap 12-5.

In game one the Falcons used superb pitching and timely hitting to secure the opening game victory. The Mustangs scored first in the top of the third with a solo homer. It would be only one of two runs that starting pitcher Zach Klapack would give up over six innings of work. Lackawanna College quickly responded in the bottom of the third when designated hitter German Vasquez drove in three runs with a double. In the following inning the Falcons doubled its run total on a three-run homer by third baseman Ray Vorhees. The five-run lead was too much for the Mustangs as they traded runs with Lackawanna College over the next two innings and scored a solo run in the seventh giving Lackawanna College a 7-3 victory.

Zach Klapack proved to be Lackawanna College's player of the game by pitching six innings and relinquishing only two runs on five hits with ten strikeouts. He received credit for the win.

In Game two the Mustangs took an early 4-0 lead in the nightcap's initial three innings. In the bottom of the fourth inning the Falcons cut in to the lead when Quinn Hanafin doubled in two runs to make the score 4-2. That two-run lead was short-lived as Monroe scored two in the fifth and two more in the sixth to give them an 8-2 advantage. Again the Falcons rebounded as they scored three runs in the bottom of the fifth on an RBI double by Brandon Earnst and bases-loaded walks by German Vasquez and Dave Curreri. With the deficit cut to three after six complete innings Monroe rallied for four more runs in the top of the seventh to give them a 12-5 margin. It proved to be a margin that the Falcons could not overcome. Kyle Borrello suffered the Loss.
