Marion NC -Â The Lackawanna College baseball team improved its win/loss record to 2-1 by beating Guilford Technical Community College 8-0 in the first game of today's double-header.
The Falcons opened the scoring when
Matt Nyce doubled in two runs in the bottom of the second. They extended that lead in the fifth with five runs, highlighted by a 3-run home run by designated hitter
Brandon Ernst.
In addition to Ernst's homer, other notable performances were
Julian Thompson's single and double, Ray Vorhees's two-run single, and
Matt Nyce's two-run double and single.
Zach Klapak received credit for the win after going four innings, relinquishing three hits, and no runs. Both Justin Goshler and
Cameron King were effective in relief as both of them held Guilford hitless and scoreless, Goshler in two innings, and King in the only inning he pitched.Â
In the nightcap, Lackawanna lost in a slugfest 12-11. It was a disappointing loss because the Falcons held a 9-2 lead going into the bottom of 3rd. Guilford scored six runs in that frame and two more in the 4th and 5th to take a 12 - 9 lead. Although Lackawanna scored twice in the 6th, they could not overtake Guilford.
The Falcons registered nine base hits at the plate, with
Quinn Hanafin recording three, all singles. Hanafin batted in four of Lackawanna's 11 runs.
Kyle Borrello had the Falcons' only extra-base hit, a homer in the top of the 2nd.
Matt Stam suffered the loss.
