FB: Falcons Ground Out 31-14 Win Over Georgia Military College

Box Score 11/20/21

MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. – It took only ten seconds for Lackawanna College to grab a lead they'd never surrender in their final regular season game. Cohen Russell's electrifying 86-yard opening kickoff return gave the Falcons the early lead, and Lackawanna College never looked back, winning 31-14 on the road against Georgia Military College at Davenport Field on Saturday afternoon, closing out the regular season in style for Lackawanna College.

The Falcons (7-3) scored 14 points in the opening quarter, and scored early in the second to race to a 21-0 lead over the Bulldogs. Apart from the Cohen return, the Falcons also scored on a short touchdown run from Isaiah Edwards and Barry Brown.

GMC answered with a touchdown drive that ended in a short pass to the flat, which ended in a ten-yard scamper for the score to make it 21-7 with 8:36 to play in the second quarter. After a Falcon drive stalled just past midfield, the Bulldogs struck again on a long touchdown pass, making it 21-14 with 3:30 to play in the half.

Backed up in the shadow of their own goalpost after a dropped kick return, the Falcons mounted a drive to the Bulldogs four-yard line, aided by a few penalties and some chunk pass plays to Russell, Jasiah Purdie, and Jawon Hall. The end result was a chip-shot, 21-yard field goal by Cameron Ceccotti to make it 24-14 at the break.

The first drive of the second half stalled for the Bulldogs in Falcon territory, but the Falcons gave possession back on their drive when they threw an interception. The Lackawanna College defense would rise to the occasion, as William Hackett picked off a deep pass down the right sideline at his own 25, and returned it into GMC territory.

The ensuing possession for the Falcons would stall inside the Bulldog 30, and the 42-yard field goal attempt was tipped at the line, giving GMC possession once again. A quick three-and-out would give the Falcons the ball back, and another time-consuming drive, highlighted by a pass play from Brown to Hall to put the Falcons in the red zone, came up empty, when Ceccotti's 23-yard field goal missed wide right at the start of the fourth quarter.

The Bulldogs stalled out just beyond midfield, and the Falcons went on the march again, only to stall themselves at the GMC 20-yard line. Ceccotti's 37-yard field goal missed wide left, this time, leaving 6:14 on the clock, and the Falcons still in front at 24-14.

Another GMC drive would stall out, this time in their own territory, and the Falcons would salt away most of the time remaining, keeping the ball on the ground and taking advantage of some penalties. Eventually, X'Zavion Evans scampered in from four yards out, giving the Falcons a 31-14 lead inside a minute to play.

With the win, Lackawanna College finishes their regular season at 7-3. The Falcons now await possible selection into a post-season bowl game. Stay tuned to lackawannafalcons.com for any news or information, in regards to possible post-season play.
