WSOC: Falcons Back In Action Against Mercer County CC

SCRANTON, Pa. – The Lackawanna College Women's Soccer team hits the road once again this weekend, heading to Mercer County CC for a 12:00pm kickoff against the Vikings in in West Windsor, NJ.
 
About The Falcons
Lackawanna College (0-6-0) enters the game after a 4-1 mid-week loss at SUNY Corning CC. The Red Barons grabbed a lead 13 minutes into the contest, and held it for nearly a half hour before the Falcons struck back on a Rachel Apsley goal in the 40th minute, assisted by Ashley Bruno. Corning would answer straight off the restart kick, scoring in the 41st minute, and then again in the 45th minute to make it 3-1 at the break. The Red Barons would tack on a fourth goal in the 47th minute, and hang on through the second half from there against the Falcons.
 
The veterans are the leaders for the Falcons, as Apsley (3 goals) and Bruno (2) lead the team in scoring. Jada Tha has the other goal, a free-kick against Hagerstown CC.
 
Sophia Andreoli is mainly the keeper, and had 22 saves against Corning. She did play in the midfield against Hagerstown due to some injuries for the Falcons. Sophia has 57 saves so far this season. Emily Cherubini has seen time in between the sticks for the Falcons this year, and had 12 saves against Hagerstown CC.
 
The Falcons are led by first-year head coach Megan Tweedy, a Lakeland HS product and former Lackawanna College soccer player. Megan was a multi-sport athlete in her time at Lackawanna College, and has spent time coaching both AAU and HS soccer locally in NEPA.
 
About The Opponents
The Mercer County CC Vikings (4-5-0) enter the game coming off a 3-1 win over the Caldwell JV team on Thursday, October 8th. The Vikings share one common opponent with the Falcons so far this year in Sussex CC. Sussex beat Mercer 7-2 earlier this season.
 
The Vikings are led by Emanuely Dos Santos, who has a team-high eight goals and seven assists on the season. Amanda Papamanolis is second on the team with five goals and four assists. Nine different Vikings have scored so far this season.
 
Paula Camus is the main keeper, starting seven of the nine games this year, and appearing in eight. Camus has 42 saves on 62 shots faced this year, with a save percentage of .677. Alyssa Firestine has also started a pair of games in goal for the Vikings. She has 12 saves on 15 shots faced in four appearances total.  
 
Elyse Diamond, an MCCC alumna and the all-time leading scorer in MCCC women's soccer history, is the head coach of the Vikings program. Diamond is a 1983 graduate from MCCC, where she set the all-time goal scoring record of 118 goals in two years, including 53 goals in her first season, when the Vikings competed as a club sport. Diamond went on to captain the Rutgers Women's Soccer team, and spent time playing for the U.S. Select Team in 1983 in international tournaments in Sweden, Denmark, and Germany.  She was inducted into the MCCC Soccer Hall of Fame in 1998.
