Esports: Overwatch Knocks Off Salt Lake CC

10/29/21

SCRANTON, Pa. -- The Lackawanna College Esports Overwatch team knocked off Salt Lake Community College, 3-0, in their NJCAAE league match on Friday night.

The first map of the night was the control point map, Ilios. From the start, Lackawanna College brought their "A" game. The Falcons captured the point quickly after the opening roll out. Then, Lackawanna held back Salt Lake to their half of the map during both rounds, making extremely quick time of the first map, going up 1-0 in the match.

The second map of the night was an escort style map, and Salt Lake CC selected King's Row. The Falcons started the map off on the defending side, and the Bruins were able to knock Lackawanna off the point, but Salt Lake was not able to completely capture the point and release the payload. With Missael DeJesus (Gamertag: LordYakuza) on Reaper, the Falcons somehow made it on point to contest before the payload could be released, which allowed the rest of the team to jump in and hold off Salt Lake CC for the rest of the round. On the attacking side, the Falcons demonstrated some talented team play and execution. The first several pushes were unsuccessful for Lackawanna College, so the Falcons regrouped in spawn and made some hero changes. With time ticking away, Lackawanna made one last push, and a combined effort between Anthony Smith (Gamertag: gummyPWNS) on Rhein, Paige O'Hara (Gamertag: momjeans) on Zarya, and Chris Rojas (Gamertag: Bebbly) on Lucio, the Falcons jumped on point. With a Beat Drop from Rojas, a Grav Surge from O'Hara and a single hammer swipe from Smith that landed him a quad kill and the Play of the Game, the Falcons were able to take the second map and a 2-0 lead.

The final map of the night was the temple of Volskaya, a two-capture point map. Lackawanna College again started off on the defending side. The Falcons held strong against the Bruin attack. Towards the end of the first round, Salt Lake CC made a desperate push, but Smith and Ashley Newell (Gamertag: Maple) had an amazing combination of ultimate abilities to stop the enemy team in their tracks. On the attacking round, Lackawanna went with a sneaky teleport strategy to the left side of the map, catching Salt Lake unaware. With that element of surprise, the Falcons pushed back Salt Lake, taking the initial point and winning the match 3-0. Everything clicked for the Falcons tonight, and the team showed great cohesion and exactly what they are capable of.

The Overwatch squad remains undefeated (5-0) in the NJCAAE fall season. They will be back in action on Monday, November 1st versus Northeastern in their final match of the NACE season. The Overwatch team will be back on-stream Friday, November 5th versus Northwest College in the NJCAAE at 7 PM EDT. Be sure to tune in on our Twitch channel at twitch.tv/lackawannaedu.
