Box Score 10/24/21

SHEPHERDSTOWN, NJ – The Lackawanna College football team got back in the win column with a 31-17 win over Hocking College on Sunday afternoon at Shepherd University in West Virginia.

The Falcons (4-2) ground out 211 yards rushing, and 420 yards of total offense. Lackawanna got four touchdowns from quarterback Barry Brown, two on the ground and two through the air, to help give them their fifth straight win over Hocking College (4-3).

The Falcons took the opening kick and were in Hocking College territory in just one play, but a long Brown pass was intercepted inside the Hawks' ten yard line. Despite the turnover, the Falcon defense held firm, and forced a three-and-out. Lackawanna College responded with a six play drive from their own 45-yard line, highlighted by a pair of Antwan Squire runs for 19 and 23 yards, respectively, and punctuated with Barry Brown's feet on a five-yard scamper, making it 7-0 with 9:40 to play in the first quarter. Hocking responded with an eleven play drive that ended in a 25-yard field goal that made it 7-3 with 2:02 to go in the first.

After both teams traded punts, the Falcons put together a 13-play, 86 yard drive that ended with a Barry Brown one-yard run to make it 14-3 Falcons, with 7:06 to go in the second quarter. After a Hocking three-and-out, the Falcons got to the Hawk 39-yard line, but ended up punting to pin Hocking deep at their own 13-yard line. The Hawks hit an 80-yard pass on third down to make it 14-10 with 1:58 to go in the half.

The Falcons would respond with a masterful two-minute drive, getting big help from a 44-yard connection from Brown to Alphonso Foray. The drive ended in a 14-yard touchdown pass from Barry Brown to Colbie Young with 44 seconds to play in the half, making it 21-10 heading into half-time. That catch gave Young his sixth touchdown in just four games this season.

After a Hocking drive stalled just past the 50, the Falcons seemed to have another drive cooking, set up with a first down at the Hocking 23 after another long pass to Foray, but the Falcons fumbled at the Hocking 15. The Lackawanna defense forced a punt, and the Falcons responded with a touchdown drive, this time with Brown finding Ja'quai Bishop for nine yards to make it 28-10 with 3:59 to go in the third quarter.

Hocking College had a 13-play drive that spanned into the fourth quarter that ended with a touchdown to make it 28-17. The Hawks might have had a chance to make it interesting after forcing a three-and-out, but the Falcon defense rose to the occasion, forcing a punt, which they partially blocked, and gave the offense possession at the Hocking 28-yard line. The Falcons turned that into a 36-yard field goal from Cameron Ceccotti to make it 31-17 with 8:07 to play.

Despite a late Lackawanna fumble, and a Hocking College drive that made it deep into Falcons' territory, the Falcon defense rose to the occasion once again, forcing a turnover on downs, and gifting the ball back to Lackawanna College, who was able to run out the clock and escape with the win.

Despite giving up 343 yards to Hocking, the Falcon defense managed asack and three tackles for loss, bending but not breaking to help make it stand up for the Falcons. Ty'Lheir Grose led the team with 5.5 tackles, and Grose and William Hackett tied for the team lead with five solo tackles, each. Cottrell Hatchett got the sack for the Falcons, coupled with his four solo tackles.

Brown led the Falcon offense through the air with 209 yards and a pair of touchdown passes. Antwan Squire ran for 104 yards, the first time he crossed the century mark this season. X'Zavion Evans had 39 yards, while Isaiah Edwards rushed for 37 yards. Jasiah Purdie caught a team-high four passes for 25 yards, while Alphonso Foray caught three passes for a team-high 95 yards.

Lackawanna College has a short turnaround, as the Falcons get back to work on Saturday, October 30th at 1:00pm when they host their NJCAA Region XIX counterparts, the Sussex County CC Skylanders. It will be homecoming for Lackawanna College, where the Falcons will honor their graduating players and students. The game will be streamed live on the Lackawanna College Falcon's YouTube Channel. The broadcast will start at 12:40pm on Saturday. John Mendola will have the play-by-play coverage, while Sports Information Director Tom Ferguson will provide the color commentary.
