Baseball splits doubleheader with Harford Community College

Bel Air, MD – The Lackawanna College Baseball Team was on the road again Sunday, as they traveled to Bel Air, MD for a doubleheader with Harford Community College.  This was the second time in a week that the Falcons were in Maryland and they hoped to get back to their winning ways.  This would be a good test for the team as they prepare to travel to Myrtle Beach and then start Region XIX play.

Jake Kelchner would get the start in Game 1 and Harford quickly put 2 runs up in the first inning to take an early 2-0 lead.  However, in the top of the 3rd, Owen Kiess started a Lackawanna rally with a single to center field.  At the next at bat, Ian Diaz, advanced Kiess to second, when he singled up the middle.  Quinn Buffington would step to the plate and drive in both Kiess and Diaz, when he doubled to left field.  Buffington's 2 RBI's tied the game at 2-2.  John Crane was able to reach base on a fielding error by the Harford third baseman, and that scored Buffington to give the Falcons a 3-2 lead.  Unfortunately, Harford would score a total of 4 runs in the 4th and 5th innings to jump back in front 6-3.
In the top of the 6th, Ouinn Buffington reached first base on a throwing error, by the Harford shortstop, which scored Carson Zuber.  Another throwing error by the Harford shortstop, allowed another Lackawanna run to come across the plate to trim the lead to one.  Unfortunately, that was as close as the Falcons would get, as they would drop Game 1 by a score of 6-5.  Kelchner would take the loss for Lackawanna.

the top of the 3rd inning, the Lackawanna bats would come alive when Owen Kiess singled to left field.  Kiess would eventually score when Quinn Buffington grounded out, but advanced Ian Diaz to 2nd base.  On the next at bat, Colin Macko hit a two run homer to center field to give the Falcons a 3-1 lead.  Wyatt Beddow came in to relieve McClain and was able to get Harford to ground out into a double play, to end the inning.  In the bottom of the 4th inning, Harford would add a run to make the game 3-2, but that was as close as they would get.  In the top of the 7th, Owen Kiess and David Williams each scored on wild pitches to give Lackawanna a 5-2 lead.  Beddow would strike out the side in the bottom of the 7th to pick up his first win of the season and give the Falcons a 5-2 win.

In the two games, Ian Diaz went 4-7 on the day, followed by Owen Kiess at 3-5.  In addition, Nate McClain and Wyatt Beddow combined for 10 strikeouts in Game 2.  Lackawanna will have a week off before they travel to Myrtle Beach, SC for a number of games.  After Myrtle Beach, the Falcons will travel back north and play in North Carolina, Virginia and New York.  Their first game in Myrtle Beach, SC will be on Sunday March 8th.
