Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Women's Basketball earns 20th win of the season with a 106-54 win over County College of Morris

Scranton, PA – On Saturday afternoon, the Lackawanna College Women's Basketball team welcomed the County College of Morris to the Historic Student Union for a Region XIX match-up.  The Lady Falcons returned home after 2 road games, which saw them beat their opponents by an average of 49.5 points.  Lackawanna came into the game in sole posession of 1st place in Region XIX and were undefeated at home.  They were looking to extend that streak but would first have to get past the Lady Titans.

The first quarter saw both teams try to take control of the game.  Two jumpers by Kyla Smith and Briaunna McCullough, followed by 2 points from Kiana Williams, gave the Lady Falcons an early 7-2 lead.  However, Coach Whittington did not think her starters were showing enough intensity, so she pulled them all for 5 fresh players.   Those 5 came out with full court pressure and then Jazmin Wright hit a jumper to put Lackawanna ahead, 13-5.  Morris would answer with a jumper of their own, but Miliesha Troche connected on her first 3-pointer of the game, to give the Lady Falcons a 16-7 lead.  As the quarter ended, Lackawanna enjoyed an 18-11 advantage.

The Lady Falcons' starters came back in the second quarter and showed the intensity and energy, Coach Whittington was looking for.  Ciaira Loyd scored 4 straight points, followed by baskets by Kyla Smith and Keyanah Price, and suddenly Lackawanna enjoyed a 10-point lead.  That lead was extended to 22 when Ciaira Loyd, Kyla Smith and Briaunna McCullough combined for 4 straight 3-pointers and then the lead increased to 29, after the Lady Falcons connected on 7 consecutive free throws.  As the buzzer sounded, Lackawanna would have a 51-22 halftime lead.

The Lady Falcons came out of the locker determined to push the ball up the court off of defensive rebounds.  A basket by Keyanah Price, followed by a Kyla Smith jumper, allowed Lackawanna to enjoy a 62-29 lead.  Ciaira Loyd would pick up her 4th foul, but Alayah Cowan, Jamie Brann, Jazmin Wright and Allanah Bradford came off the bench and pushed the Lady Falcons' lead to 35 points.  Morris would answer with a basket, but as the quarter ended, Lackawanna took a 76-43 lead heading into the final 10 minutes.

As the fourth quarter began, the Lady Falcons controlled the boards and were able to turn their defensive rebounds into fast break points.  After 3 ½ minutes. Lackawanna had pushed their lead to 42 points.  Miliesha Troche and Briaunna McCullough each had transition points and McCullough would follow that up with a 3-pointer.  On consecutive possessions, Keyanah Price and Jazmin Wright each grabbed offensive rebounds and turned them into points.  Jayla Lewis would come off the bench and connect on a short jumper, while Alayah Cowan and Jazmin Wright scored the final points of the game, to give the Lady Falcons a 106-54 win over the County College of Morris.

This is the 5th time this season Lackawanna has gone over the century mark in a game.  With the win, they now move to 20-3 on the season and 11-1 in Region XIX.  This is their 12th win in a row and they remain undefeated at home.  Briaunna McCullough led all scorers with 19 points, followed by Kyla Smith, who had to leave the game in the fourth quarter with an injury, with 16 points.  Ciaira Loyd finished with 13 points and 5 assists, while Alayah Cowan came off the bench to score 12 points.  In addition to her 11 points, Keyanah Price grabbed a game high 12 rebounds.  The Lady Falcons return to action Tuesday February 11th, when they travel to Mercer County Community College for another Region XIX match-up.  Tip-off is scheduled for 5:00pm.
