Martinsville, VA – After splitting Saturday's doubleheader with Patrick Henry Community College, the Lackawanna College Baseball team was looking to bounce back and take the weekend series. However, the Patriots had the same plan and were set out to deny the Falcons a series win. Evident in Saturday's games, both teams were evenly matched and either was capable of sweeping the Sunday doubleheader.
In the first game, Lackawanna jumped out to a 4-0 lead behind the hitting of
Matt Hayes and
Ian Diaz. In the top of the first inning, Diaz doubled to get things started and eventually scored on an RBI single by Hayes. In the third inning,
Quinn Buffington helped the Falcons rally, when he connected on a triple. After a
David Williams strike out,
Marlon Lindsey would hit the first home run of the season to give Lackawanna a 4-0 lead. However, in the bottom of the fourth inning, Patrick Henry scored 4 runs to tie the game up, 4-4. For the next three innings, neither team could get things going offensively, and the game would go into extra innings. The Falcons were able to get
Marlon Lindsey to second base, but were unable to bring him home. The Patriots took advantage of this and scored on a sacrifice fly to right field, for a 5-4 win.
In the second game of the doubleheader, Lackawanna again jumped out to an early 1-0 when
Matt Hayes hit an RBI double that scored
Quinn Buffington. However, Patrick Henry would add a run in the second inning and another in the third inning, to take a 3-1 lead. The Falcons were able to answer back, when Kieran Versaw-Barnes hit a double that drove in both
Billy D'Ambrosia and
Marlon Lindsey, to tie things up at 3-3. The Patriots' bats would come alive in the fifth inning, as they sent three runs across the plate, to take a 6-3 lead. In their final at bat, Lackawanna would get back in the game when
Matt Hayes doubled in Jake Diceasre and
Quinn Buffington to trim the lead to 6-5. Unfortunately, the Falcons could not put any more runs on the scoreboard and would fall to the Patriots, by a final of 6-5.
With the loss, Lackawanna finishes the weekend series with a record of 1-3. Matt Lindsey led the Falcons in the first game, going 3-4 with 2 RBI's and a home run, while in the second game of the doubleheader,
Matt Hayes led Lackawanna with two hits and three RBI's. The Falcons will be back on the road next weekend when they travel to Wye Mills, MD to face Chesapeake Community College in a Saturday doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled for 11:00am.
