Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Women's Basketball earns 10th win of the season by defeating Monroe Express 77-46

New Rochelle, NY – The Lackawanna College Women's Basketball Team traveled to the Bronx Thursday night seeking their 10th win of the season.  Standing in their way was the Monroe Express from Monroe College-Bronx.  The Express were coming into the match-up with a record of 10-5 and were determined not to let the Lady Falcons get to double digits in the win column.

Lackawanna wasted no time finding their rhythm in the 1st quarter, as Briaunna McCullough hit a 3-pointer to give the Lady Falcons an early 3-2 lead.  Ciaira Loyd, Keyanah Price and Jamie Brann each added layups, to increase their lead to 9-2.  Loyd and Price would continue to get to the basket and Lackawanna quickly enjoyed a 15-5 lead.  McCullough and Brann each scored again and then a 3 by Kyla Smith extended the lead to 22-8.  McCullough was fouled on the next possession, where she converted on the 3-point play, to give the Lady Falcons a 25-9.  The quarter would end with Lackawanna leading 25-12.

Keyanah Price picked up where she left off in the 1st to score the first 2 points of the 2nd quarter.  Another layup by Price, combined with a Ciaira Loyd 3-point play, pushed the Lady Falcons' lead to 32-12.  The Express answered back with 4 straight points to cut the lead to 32-16, however, Ciaira Loyd quickly stopped the Express run with a steal and an assist to Briaunna McCullough.  On the next possession, McCullough connected on a 3-pointer, followed by a Keyanah Price basket and the Lackawanna lead was back to 37-16.  Out of an Express timeout, Jamie Brann would hit a 3, giving the Lady Falcons a 40-16 advantage.  The Express ended the half on a 5-2 run, but the Lady Falcons would go into the locker room with a 21-point lead, 42-21.

At the beginning of the 3rd quarter, Briaunna McCullough scored her 14th point of the game when she connected on a 3-pointer, giving Lackawanna a 45-23 lead.  Later in the quarter, a 3 by Miliesha Troche and a 3-point play by Kiana Williams gave the Lady Falcons a comfortable 59-26 lead.  Lackawanna continued to dominate the offensive side of the ball, as Kyla Smith added her 5th point of the game, with a layup.  On the defensive side of the ball, Jamie Brann grabbed her 6th defensive rebound of the game, to keep the Express from making any type of run.  The 3rd quarter would end with the Lady Falcons leading 63-33.

The Express scored the first 2 points of the 4th quarter, but Kyla Smith quickly answered with a 2 off her own.  On their next two possessions, Monroe College-Bronx connected on two straight 3-pointers to pull within 25, however, Briaunna McCullough would do what Lackawanna had been able to do most of the game, converting a 3-point play.  She would also add another basket, shortly after, to push the lead to 73-41.  Keyanah Price scored her first 2 points of the 2nd half and grabbed her 6th rebound of the game, which gave the Lady Falcons a 31-point advantage, 77-46 and that would be the final score as the buzzer sounded.

The Lady Falcons came into the game looking for their 10th win of the season and that is exactly what they left New Rochelle with.  While they scored 77 points, their defense played a big role in the win.  Lackawanna held the Express to just 23% shooting and grabbed 33 defensive rebounds (Jamie Brann 8, Keyanah Price 7 and Kiana Williams, 6).  On the offensive side, Briaunna McCullough led the way with 20 points, followed by Ciaira Loyd with 15 and Keyanah Price with 14.  Loyd also dished out 8 assists and had two steals on the night.  As impressive as they played, the Lady Flacons also shot 12-13 from the Free Throw line, for 92.3%.   Lackawanna returns to action next Tuesday, as they travel to Branchburg, NJ to take on Raritan Valley Community College.  The Lady Falcons defeated Raritan Valley 83-55 on November 19th when they faced off at the Lackawanna College Historic Student Union in Scranton, PA.  Tip-off is scheduled for 5:00pm.
