Scranton, PA – In a rematch of the December 12
th match-up, where Union County College won 73-60, the Lackawanna College Women's Basketball team welcomed the Lady Owls into the Historic Student Union, in what was being billed as one of the biggest Region XIX games of the season, so far. Union County had sole possession of 1
st place, with a record of 7-0, while the Lady Falcons were sitting in 2
nd place with a record of 6-1. In fact, Lackawanna was undefeated at home, while Union County had not lost a game on the road. Both teams came into the game, each having won 5 of their last 6 games and both were looking for a statement win.
From the beginning of the first quarter, the Lady Falcons showed they were ready to put the December 12
th loss behind them and take it to Union County. While the Lady Owls scored the first 2 points of the game, that would be the last time they would enjoy a lead. After a free throw by
Kiana Williams,
Ciaira Loyd connected on a 3-pointer, to give Lackawanna an early 4-2 lead.
Jamie Brann grabbed an offensive rebound and put it back for 2 and then
Ciaira Loyd came back on the next offensive possession and hit another 3, to push the lead to 9-2. For the rest of the quarter,
Keyanah Price and
Jamie Brann took over on both the boards and in the scoring category. Their effort would give Lackawanna a 20-9 lead, at the end of the first quarter.
The second quarter would prove to be one of the best quarters the Lady Falcons have played all season.
Briaunna McCullough started off with 3 straight baskets, followed by buckets by
Kyla Smith and
Ciaira Loyd. Price and Brann were once again dominant on the boards and they were able to create a number of fast break opportunities for Lackawanna. Brann would also convert 2 more baskets after offensive rebounds, to put the Lady Falcons up 38-9.
Kyla Smith added another Lady Falcons' 3-pointer and Lackawanna saw themselves going into the locker room with a 42-13 lead. The Lady Falcons defense held Union County to only 4 points in the quarter.
The third quarter saw
Keyanah Price and
Briaunna McCullough take over, with both able to take the ball into the paint for points. Price even took advantage of Union County stepping back from her, as she converted on a 3-pointer. The Lady Falcons' guards were able to handle the pressure Union County tried to apply and they also were able to apply pressure of their own, and once again limit any 2nd chance opportunities the Lady Owls would have. Towards the end of the quarter,
Miliesha Troche would convert on a 3, followed by a jumper by
Ciaira Loyd and all of the sudden, Lackawanna enjoyed a 62-26 lead.
In the fourth quarter, Union County settled down and began to get the ball to the basket. However, the Lady Falcons played the same game that had played the first three quarters. Union County continued to press Lackawanna, but
Kyla Smith,
Ciaira Loyd and
Briaunna McCullough stayed patient and were able to move the ball across the half court line. After breaking the press, they were able to get the ball to
Jamie Brann,
Kiana Williams and
Keyanah Price to increase their lead, at one point, to 74-37. Mya Grimes and Daniella Marmol converted on a number of scoring opportunities for Union County, but after 2 free throws from
Allanah Bradford, the Lady Falcons would come away with a 78-50 victory.
With the win, Lackawanna moves to 14-3 on the season and moves into a first place tie in Region XIX, with Union County. They were led by
Briaunna McCullough with 17 points and 8 rebounds, followed by
Ciaira Loyd with 14 points and
Jamie Brann and
Keyanah Price with 13 points, apiece. Price also had a dominating game on the boards, as she grabbed a total of 15 defensive rebounds. The Lady Falcons return to action Saturday, at home, as they welcome in Monroe College for a 3:00pm tip-off. They will look to avenge their 67-64 loss to Monroe back on November 9
