SCRANTON, Pa. – In a rematch from their junior college pasts, Lackawanna College hosted Monroe University for an NCAA contest for the first time in women's volleyball on Tuesday night, with Monroe taking advantage of several Lackawanna errors to pull away for the 3-1 win (25-8, 21-25, 25-17, 25-15) inside the historic Lackawanna College Student Union gymnasium.
 
Nadia Toth (Dalton, PA) had a team-best seven kills in .263 hitting, along with two solo blocks, while Neurdia Osias (Huntington Station, NY) and Sophia Bedics (Bethlehem, PA) each added six kills. Bedics had eleven digs, while Adalee Rosado Rivera (Guyama, Puerto Rico) added a team-best 13 digs, and Jana Hofmann (Colorado Springs, CO) had five kills and ten digs. First-year setter Kady Schreiner (Mountaintop, PA) led the Falcons with 23 assists.
 
The Falcons (0-2) were sluggish out of the gate in set one, giving away five aces to the Mustangs (1-0) and committing nine attack errors. Meanwhile, half of the eight points scored by Lackawanna came because of errors from Monroe. The Mustangs, unbeaten against the Falcons in their history, seemed poised to roll to victory once again.
 
The second set was very different, as the Falcons came out firing, hitting .250 as a squad and limiting the errors, while Monroe was uncharacteristically sloppy in their attack. In the second set alone, Osias came up with four kills playing through the middle, while both Toth and Regan Freas (Louisa, VA) added three kills, each.
 
The Mustangs hit just .120 in the second set, committing five attack errors and three service errors, and the second set loss set up an intriguing third set.
 
Monroe leapt out to an early lead, but the Falcons battled back to score three straight points and go ahead at 7-6 on three-straight errors from Monroe. The Mustangs went back up at 10-7, but the Falcons once again used Monroe errors against them and got a kill from Hofmann to make it 10-10. The teams traded points, with Monroe holding leads between two and four, and a rotation error allowed the Falcons to get within 19-17, but Monroe went on a 6-0 run to close out the third set and take control.
 
In set four, the Mustangs pounced on five reception errors and an attack error from the Falcons to lead 8-1. Lackawanna got things back within striking distance at 12-7, using a pair of errors from the Mustangs, but Monroe went on a 3-0 burst with three-straight kills to get back up 15-7. The Falcons had it within five points twice more, but Monroe got to match point, then won it on a challenge when a Mustang kill was ruled out of bounds, initially, before being corrected.
 
Lackawanna College now has an extended break until their next pair of matches, set for Saturday, September 12^th, at Messiah University against the hosts and Notre Dame of Maryland. The first match of the tri-match is set for 11:00am ET for the Falcons in Grantham, PA.
