SCRANTON, Pa. – Lackawanna College softball got off to quick starts in both games on its way to a doubleheader sweep over Sussex County CC in Region XIX Division II action on Tuesday afternoon, 19-0 and 12-4, at Scranton HS softball field.
Â
The Falcons (34-13, 15-5) were relentless at the plate in both first innings in the doubleheader, scoring eleven runs in game one and eight runs in game two to sprint to leads that Sussex (5-19, 4-14) could never truly challenge.
Â
To start game one, the visitors got a runner to second on an error to start the game, but starting pitcher
Mekenzie Revere (Ansonia, CT) struck out the side to keep the Skylanders quiet. In the home half of the first, the Falcons scored eleven runs on eight hits and three Sussex errors.
Riley Knott (Clarks Summit, PA) got Lackawanna started with an RBI single to just behind second base to make it 1-0. The Falcons scored a second run a few batters later on a bases-loaded single to left from
Gracie Sokol (Belle Vernon, PA). An RBI groundout made it 3-0, then a wild pitch scored a fourth run. An error let another run score, and the Falcons would score six more after that, using three RBI singles, a double from Knott, and two more errors that scored runs and made it 11-0 after just one inning.
Â
Lackawanna added two more on RBI hits from
Mekenzie Dineen (Wilmington, DE) and
Laniah Tasker (Chambersburg, PA) in the second, followed by two more runs in the third from an RBI double off the bat of
Tori May (New Castle, PA), and another RBI single from Dineen.
Â
The Falcons added four more runs in the bottom of the fourth, using two sac flies, a bases-loaded walk, and an RBI single from
Alexis Shotwell (Lehman, PA) that pushed it to 19-0. Sussex got its first hit of the game in the fifth inning, and then a walk to put two on, but pitcher
Abigail Yenalevich (Kingston, PA), who came in the previous inning, pitched around another walk with a pair of fielder's choices and a strikeout to end the game early via run-rule.
Â
Revere got the win, striking out five in three innings. Dineen had two hits and three RBIs off the bench, while Tasker, Knott, Sokol, and
Haleigh Mazol (Stroudsburg, PA) each had two hits. Tasker, Knott, and May all had two RBIs.
Â
The Falcons got off to a similar start in game two, scoring eight runs early to get out to another lead. After
Mia Scalese (Moscow, PA) retired the side in order to start the game, Sokol singled home the game's first run in the home half of the first to make it 1-0. An error let a second run score, and a wild pitch made it 3-0.
Arianna Gaylord (Exeter, PA) hit an RBI single to center that pushed it to 4-0. Later, with two outs,
Ayahna Fleisher (Duncannon, PA) hit a two-run single to left, and
Kyleah Edwards (Taylor, PA) followed that up with a two-run single of her own that made it 8-0, Falcons, after one.
Â
Sussex finally broke through in the second inning, using a sac fly, a two-run single, and a wild pitch to score four runs and get within 8-4 after 1.5 innings. The Falcons responded with an RBI single from May in the home half to get a run back and make it 9-4 heading into the third.
Â
Scalese pitched around a walk and a single to strand a pair of runners, and Knott delivered a two-run single in the bottom frame to make it 11-4, Falcons. Scalese threw up another zero in the top of the fourth, helped by a back-pick play between Mazol and Sokol. However, the Falcons couldn't cash in a pair of two-out singles in the bottom half.
Â
Into the fifth, Fleisher came on to pitch, getting around a leadoff single with a pair of strikeouts and then a fielder's choice. In the home half, a strikeout looked to put two outs on the board, but
Elizabeth DePrimo (Dunmore, PA) reached when the catcher dropped the strike and then overthrew the target at first base. DePrimo got to second on a wild pitch, and was in scoring position when Mazol came up with one away. Haleigh singled hard to center, and DePrimo rounded third and sprinted for home. The throw was on-target, but the bounce caromed the ball past the catcher and DePrimo slid in for the run that triggered the run-rule victory.
Â
Scalese picked up her eighth win in a row, allowing four runs on five hits in four innings. Fleisher was 2-for-3 with three runs and two RBIs, while Edwards went 3-for-3 with two RBIs and two runs. Knott had two more RBIs, while Sokol, Mazol, Gaylord, and May each had two hits.
Â
Lackawanna College softball is back to region play on Thursday, April 23
rd, when the Falcons are set to host Raritan Valley CC for a doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled for 3:00pm ET at Scranton HS softball field.
