GEORGETOWN, Del. – Poor defense and an inability to cash in doomed Lackawanna College softball at Delaware Tech CC on Saturday afternoon, as the Falcons fell in a pair of narrow defeats, 4-1 and 4-3, in Region XIX Division II action in Delaware.
Â
The Falcons (32-13, 13-5) committed a combined nine errors across the twin bill, while stranding 13 baserunners and mustering just four runs, wasting two solid performances in the pitching circle from
Mekenzie Revere (Ansonia, CT) and
Ayahna Fleisher (Duncannon, PA).
Â
Game one was dripping with tension, with neither team able to take advantage of baserunners through the first 3.5 innings. In the home half of the second, DTCC had a pair of baserunners on back-to-back errors, and the runners went to second and third on a passed ball, but Revere got a huge liner to
Mackenzie Adolfson (Throop, PA) at third, helping the Falcons double off the lead runner for two quick outs. Revere got a grounder to second to strand the other runner and keep it clean through two innings.
Â
Lackawanna wasted a two-out single from Fleisher in the third, and Del Tech wasted a walk and another error, also with two outs, as Revere got another big line out to strand the pair and keep the game scoreless.
Â
Delaware Tech broke through in the home half of the fourth inning, using a leadoff single and a walk to put two on. A sac bunt advanced the runners into scoring position, and a single to left field scored the first run of the game. DTCC tried to squeeze a second run out on the play, but a quick relay from
Riley Knott (Clarks Summit, PA) to
Laniah Tasker (Chambersburg, PA) at the plate eliminated that runner and kept it to just the one run scoring.
Â
Mia Scalese (Moscow, PA) and
Haleigh Mazol (Stroudsburg, PA) both singled in the fifth inning to give the Falcons a pair of baserunners with two outs, but Lackawanna was once again unable to take advantage. In the bottom frame, an error on the infield, followed by back-to-back singles, loaded the bases for DTCC with nobody out. A third-straight single scored the game's second run, and a fielder's choice, coupled with an error, let two more runs score and made it 4-0, DTCC, after five innings.
Â
Lackawanna couldn't take advantage of a leadoff single in the sixth, and Del Tech threatened for more in the home half, loading the bases with one out, but Revere got two fly outs to strand the runners and keep things within arm's length heading into the seventh.
Â
Gracie Sokol (Belle Vernon, PA) doubled to left to lead the inning off, and Scalese reached when a pop-up to the pitcher was dropped. A walk loaded the bases, still with nobody out, but a foul out, followed by a ground out, traded two outs for the first run for Lackawanna. A pop up to first stranded the remaining pair of runners and ended the game.
Â
Revere pitched six innings, giving up four runs, two earned, on five hits in the loss. Fleisher was 1-for-4 with an RBI, while Mazol, Scalese, Sokol, and
Kyleah Edwards (Taylor, PA) each recorded hits. Sokol's double was the only extra-base knock for the Falcons.
Â
Lackawanna led 3-1 in game two heading into the sixth inning, but DTCC rallied to tie, then won it on a walk-off in extra innings to stun the Falcons.
Â
Fleisher, who was also doing the pitching, led the game off with a double, but Del Tech retired the side in order from there to strand her. In the bottom of the first, an error, followed by two ground outs, put a runner on third with two away. A double to left scored the run, but Fleisher got a soft liner to end the inning.
Â
The Falcons had a runner on second with two outs in the top of the second, but were unable to scratch it across. In the home half,
Mekenzie Dineen (Wilmington, DE) combined with Sokol for a double play to keep DTCC off the boards. An error with two outs in the bottom of the third didn't hurt the Falcons, either, while Fleisher struck out the side.
Â
In the fourth, Lackawanna's offense finally got up-and-running. Two singles, sandwiching a fielder's choice, put two on, and Sokol hit an RBI single to tie the game. Scalese grounded out and forced a run home to put the Falcons up, 2-1, and then Mazol delivered with a two-out double to right field that made it 3-1, Falcons, after 3.5 innings.
Â
Fleisher pitched around a one-out triple with back-to-back strikeouts in the bottom of the fourth, but things were quiet for both teams until the home half of the sixth.
Â
A one-out hit batter gave DTCC a runner in the sixth, and a single put two runners on. A hard single to center scored a run, and another single to center tied the game. The Falcons managed to retire the batter trying to stretch it into a double, and Fleisher got a strikeout to keep it even at 3-3.
Â
An error almost threatened to undue the Falcons in the bottom of the seventh, but Fleisher struck out two-straight batters to send it to extras.
Â
Lackawanna had a runner on second to start the eighth, and a walk, put two on. The Falcons were unable to convert, however, hurt by an infield fly, plus a fly out and liner to center. In the bottom frame, DTCC immediately advanced its courtesy runner to third on a sac bunt, then lifted a fly ball to right field, deep enough to score the runner and walk it off for Delaware Tech.
Â
Fleisher allowed four runs, two earned, on five hits, striking out ten in 7.2 innings of action. She was also 2-for-4 with a double. Knott was 2-for-3 with a walk, while Mazol went 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI. Sokol and Scalese each had RBIs.
Â
Lackawanna College will look to bounce back with more Region XIX DII action, starting on Tuesday, April 21
st, with a doubleheader against Sussex County CC. First pitch is set for 3:00pm ET at Scranton HS softball field.
